Wish I brought a ? - fishenjim - 04-26-2014

I have been reading all the great advise on puna web and taking notes.Lots of info I would not have considered. The more refined my packiong list becomes the more I wonder what am I missing? With the limitation of airline baggage what one thing do you wish you had got on the mainland before coming to puna. All my tools, extra clothes, momentos etc.are packed to be shipped when I arrive and have a place to ship them.I won't bore anyone with my packing list,I just hope I already have most of what you may suggest.I am sure though somethings will be mentioned I have forgot. Thanks for your priceless advise in advance. Not sure how many cases of tasty cakes I can get in my suitcase.[Smile]

I think more can be said of what I wish I didn't bring. Bring a good can opener... I came with 10 big boxes and probably threw out half of that and working on getting rid of the rest.

Agree with Eric. All I brought was books (many of which I threw out or gave away), and important documents. My move was a great opportunity to shed stuff I didn't need.

It might be cost effective to ship over a vehicle, depending on where you live and what you drive.

a good honda eu 2000i ..... priority mailed it over as with everything else I brought along - bought furniture - thru appliances here.

Genset - it was invaluable during construction - and still once or twice a year its keeps the lights, fridge and internet on during outages (more common than one may think - much better in the last year or two)

also handy if you have a large ish lot - portable power to run the tools - anything from (baby) welders to jackhammers and power screw drivers

Bring Money, lots of it.Everything here costs so much more than anywhere else except maybe Japan.
A good 2000i Honda generator and case hardened steel chain and locks to secure it,so it does not walk away without asking.
Bring a good truck,Toyota or Dodge are popular.
Put good tires on the truck prior to shipping.
Anything made of leather or metal tends to mold or rust straight away.
Leave your books there in storage.
Or have a giant yard sale.
Bring a smile, and 3 good non electric can openers .
You can shop locally here for all else.
Be prepared for sticker shock.
Aloha and Happy travels.

They sell TastyKakes in Volcano at the Volcano Store - I love these and just can't get enough. If there are none left, I got there first.

LoL @ "Bring Money"
They say that the key to making a small fortune in Hawai'i is to bring a large fortune.

"Life is labor, and all that is good in life comes from that labor..."

tastycakes at the volcano store great news thanks for all the great response.I can open a number 10 can in 10 seconds with the can opener on my swiss army knife.not really its about 10 min. 29 curse words and 2 cuts.I just sold a 2000i generator 12 years old 750 bucks my understanding is its hard to ship gas powered tools that have been used.I plan on getting a new one anyhow that little putt putt has the heart of a lion.what not to bring is something I see alot of on this site, the dude abides I am selling or have sold almost everything.Lots of money hows everything I have or will ever have.I moved to L.A. in 1994 with 600 buks a 10 year old taurus and a christmass tree stapped to the roof, from P.A,came back 3 years latter alot better off.I prefer a rather spartan lifestyle, low impact.Fishing for fun and food is still free in the ocean at least it is there.I also have abit of the green thumb and love to garden and raise animals.I hope to have enough money more so I hope to spend it wisely.Selling my 2013 chevy spark I dont think it would be a good puna car.Hopefully I can get some beat up old truck for my 10 grand and a scooter or enduro cycle.I havent flown in 15 years and it scares the hell out of me.I will be the one kissing the ground there at ITO. I plan on NEVER leaving the B.I..Thanks again for the advise.Anybody needs any painting patching plaster, drywall etc I have done restoration for 20 years I have many referances. Also many many years off food service.Looking to book a flight around end of may,see you all then [ if the plane makes it]

And make sure the paint on your truck is in good shape. Even small scratches in the paint that probably would matter in dry areas on the mainland, can quickly turn to rust. Better yet, get your truck painted before you send it over.
