Tiki Gardens - fishenjim - 05-03-2014 I cant seem to get much info on T.G., no web site and not much mention here.If I understand it has two sections.one maybe with ccr and one without. Is this true.Any one here on Puna web live there or know some one who does.Price of lot and location seem ideal.I thought I wanted more land then I hear how hard it is to maintain even one acre so smaller cheaper may be the ticket.I dont plan on having permit for anything.I knoiw that wont fly with the nanawhalers how bout the tiki gardeners.Any one know about the lot on silversword been for sale almost a year and a half for 5,500.I imagine it may have some issues.Again many thanks in advance for the info! RE: Tiki Gardens - unknownjulie - 05-04-2014 I may have seen those silversword lots finally sold. I am not sure. They have been for sale a long time. There were several of them. I've driven all through TikiGardens. There are stretches of road that seem quite remote. There are people living in some shacks. There are also some nice houses. I cannot imagine anyone in there asking for a building permit. Seriously, if you want to hide out and do your own thing, but be close to town- then this could be the best option. I dont know how much the county patrols through there looking for unpermitted buildings. Someone else may know about this. You would have to have big pittbulls and fencing, and cameras and maybe more for security. I think there may be some tweakers in there too. If you are big and tough, you could live there as a transplant. (IMO) RE: Tiki Gardens - Punaperson - 05-04-2014 Tiki Gardens only has access through Ainaloa - you'll have a lot of traffic any time you go in or out. Lots of night time / weekend yelling and police sirens - domestic violence ? " I dont plan on having permit for anything. " On small lots, sanitation ( or lack thereof ) is quickly noticed and reported by neighbors, even at a distance. The size of TG lots currently requires a septic system, which requires a permit. This is a health issue which will get the county inspectors out faster than anything else ( less than one week after reporting someone trying to 'homestead' in my friend's neighborhood with no toilet system in place ). Also, the County is working on a process that compares Google maps to existing building permits. Trying to live 'unpermitted' in a subdivision might not be the best long-range plan. RE: Tiki Gardens - kimo wires - 05-04-2014 I worked on a property (shack) there a couple years ago. The guy living there, security for the owner, was doing his business in a bucket. Don't know what he was doing with it. ewww. RE: Tiki Gardens - fishenjim - 05-04-2014 Well I don't want to be the guy going in the bucket ewww is right.I was led to believe the county had approved two different composting toilets.Do they expect you to have septic as well.I believe composting your waste and putting it in the flower garden to be less impact than septic.human waste is taken from (treatment) plants all over the country and put directly on fields growing food for human consumption. It is regularly released untreated in to our rivers and streams. That being said I have no problem having permitted septic if that doesn't lead to unpermitted catchment, solar, plumbing, you live in a shipping container etc.problems.Don't know about there but here once you get inspectors lurking around it can be trouble. The rest of what was mentioned fit pretty well my instincts about T.G.Traffic,yes we can all agree it sucks. After 3 years in L.A I have a different perspective.Or I'm just more tolerant of traffic that is not on that scale.Domestic disputes, never did get that one if you want to scream and throw things I'll leave. Some people really do love to hate each other.Big and tough, well I'm 6feet 2 195 and pretty fit.Tough guys always get what's coming to them and I don't want any of that.Be nice deal fairly and be ready to defend yourself and property.Really not being tough is we're it's at.The quiet guy unassuming and unallarming is usually the most dangerous when he chooses.I really do hate to think fences, dogs, cameras and more are necessary to be safe.I have heard this repeated here many times and would be a fool to dismiss it.Who are these people(thieves) tweakers, fathers feeding families, transients, two faced neighbours, professionals. Are they ever caught?Do they target newbies? RE: Tiki Gardens - Derrick Barnicoat - 05-04-2014 Yes that is a composting toilet. The basic composting toilet is a 5 gallon bucket housed in something that looks like a regular toilet. Instead of flushing you cover your doings with sawdust, allot of saw dust until the bucket is three quarters full. Then it is put into a compost pile and surrounded by hay bails and more loose hay on top. Then you do this process for a year then let it sit for another year or until you start to notice earth worms are enjoying it. Once the earthworms show up it is nutritious soil and is indistinguishable from another type of composted soil. If done correctly with lots of soil and hay, the process should be odorless but, of course, some people are lazy and don't do it thoroughly. RE: Tiki Gardens - Hunt Stoddard - 05-04-2014 It's not so much your personal safety but rather keeping your stuff. Are they ever caught? Not usually. It's amazing for an island you'd think recovering stolen property wouldn't be all that hard. Nope. Who are they? Guys driving around looking for available opportunity. Follow a few simple rules, and more than likely you'll keep your stuff: Put up a gate! almost first thing. Put up "No trespassing," "Keep Out," and "KAPU" signs. Make passers-by feel unwelcome. Don't leave anything valuable visible from the road. When you leave (or sleep!) lock everything up. Do this from the start, and you'll probably keep your stuff. Never get on their list or they'll make you a part of their regular rounds. I learned this the hard way on my HPP lot with a farm building. It got hit multiple times, and each time I found a crushed Starbucks can on the ground. They guy was making my place a regular stop during his morning commute! This was when I was dumb enough to not even have a gate up. RE: Tiki Gardens - Hunt Stoddard - 05-04-2014 "Who are these people(thieves) tweakers, fathers feeding families, transients, two faced neighbours, professionals." All of the above, depending on circumstance. RE: Tiki Gardens - unknownjulie - 05-04-2014 Go look in old threads about the composting toilets. I think they still make you have a septic if they allow the composting toilet. From what I remember, the requirements made it extremely expensive, but I am not an expert. Just an avid reader. I really couldn't figure out a "low cost", "safe" way to do anything here. I finally just bought a house already built in Hilo. GL. RE: Tiki Gardens - ericlp - 05-04-2014 The county doesn't patrol looking for anything. What have they done about the house of cards? Probably nothing. Build away. |
