returning after 25 years in Asia - punathai - 05-04-2014 Left lower Puna 25 years ago for Asia and only short visits over the years, but I now find myself wanting to return and know to expect a lot of changes and have a few questions before I re visit and try to find the perfect location for me and my Thai family. This time, I'm looking for a bit higher elevations where it is cooler and would like to find a place where the Koki frogs and mosquitoes are not my neighbors. Need decent speed internet, electricity, low crime, neighbors, but not too close, ideal temperature range- 70f-80f, not in the rain belt. Your suggestions appreciated............. RE: returning after 25 years in Asia - Mimosa - 05-04-2014 Hawi . RE: returning after 25 years in Asia - shave_ice - 05-04-2014 You can be my neighbor and teach me all the good thai food recipes. [] RE: returning after 25 years in Asia - punathai - 05-04-2014 Mimosa, I've always liked Hawi, but land prices are a bit high and it's so far to the supermarket in Waimea................unless there is a supermarket there now?? shave ice, the Thai wife could start up Thai cooking classes if there is a demand for it..........where are you?? RE: returning after 25 years in Asia - shave_ice - 05-04-2014 I live in Nanawale, so it probably doesn't fit your description. Though I do get good internet connection. I like my place, but lots are small. I have 5 of them (1 acre total), so unless you buy up several, your property is small. There are definitely coquis in all of Puna unless you are at a higher elevation (like Volcano area). Honestly though, once you've lived here for awhile, you don't even notice them anymore. Unless there is about to be an earthquake and then they go silent. It is very noticeable and eerie! RE: returning after 25 years in Asia - punathai - 05-04-2014 They have coquis even up to Glenwood/Kurtistown?? If you have mostly pasture and few trees...........still come? And how high up is the mosquito zone?? RE: returning after 25 years in Asia - Lee M-S - 05-04-2014 I'm at 1400 ft elevation, the top of Hawaiian Acres. Plenty coquis, mosquitoes in the evening. I've noticed that on frequently-mowed areas, like playing fields, there aren't so many coquis. ><(((*> ~~~~ ><(("> ~~~~ ><'> ~~~~ >(> RE: returning after 25 years in Asia - Mimosa - 05-04-2014 We stay at 3200ft elevation,no fast internet, slow dial up,no cell reception, cokee's are here but the plethora of chickens eat them.Co Kee shut up below temp 64 but as Lee-M-S said keep it mowed and no problem.Misquotes oh yes choke .You have to go all the way to 4000ft elevation and seldom a CoKee and very few misquotes but you need warm cloths and wood heat. But have HELLCO and fast internet up there. HAWI has grown in 25 years but at 100K an acre or there abouts, only the wealthy live there,we have ohana up that side. Costco in Kona is closest big store but KTA is in Kamuela and i think food land. Volcano town is probably your best bet, The Thai restaurant in volcano is ok if you like american thai food for the farang. I suggest you rent some where for a year 1st,and explore all your options. RE: returning after 25 years in Asia - shave_ice - 05-04-2014 Sounds like Volcano area fits most of your criteria. I looked at a property outside of Volcano town. It was nice and decent price, but it's just little to cool up there for me. I don't want to have to start a fire to be warm! [] By the way, there are two Thai restaurants in Pahoa, which is kinda funny for such a small town. RE: returning after 25 years in Asia - dmbwest - 05-04-2014 Said it before, Only one of those is for people who like good food, the other is for da' farang ... wai, pog |
