Hawaii ranks 5th worst for retirement - pahoated - 05-06-2014

Hawaii is in the bottom five worst states to retire, based on the survey criteria. New York is 50, South Dakota is 1. Hey, what can you expect, it is a mainland survey. It is generally weighted by the fact most retirees are on fixed incomes and Hawaii has one of the higher cost of living rankings.

Hawaii/Puna is not that expensive. It's actually cheaper than San Jose CA where I'm visiting now. You just have to lower your standard of living, like not expecting running water, electricity, paved roads, infrastructure, police & fire protection . . . LOL

Who needs running water when it rains all the time? I do expect running water in Hawaii/Puna, I just don't expect to turn it off.

Actually I don't know why we would be #5... Our modern hospitals here are top notch!
