Recent Observations of the Kahauale`a 2 flow: - Bullwinkle - 05-21-2014
may 5th The most distant active front of the Kahauale#699;a 2 flow was just over 8.6 km (5.3 miles)
may 15: with the flow front now at 8.8 km (5.5 mi) northeast from Pu`u `O`o.
1/4 mile (plus or minus) in two weeks

There's a new map out as of yesterday showing only three breakouts, the furthest active lava being 3.9 miles from Pu`u `O`o instead of the 5.5 miles we saw two weeks ago.

Recent Observations of the Kahauale`a 2 flow: Yesterday, HVO geologists located three small breakouts in the interior of the Kahauale`a 2 flow 1.8-6.2 km (1.1-3.9 mi) from the Pu`u `O`o vent. Over the past 24 hours, PNcam views showed no distant smoke plumes during the day consistent with active lava not reaching the forest at the edges of the flow; at night, there were infrequent glimpses of weak glow from the two closest breakouts.
