If you're not a Geek, this could be problems for the average Windows user here in Puna. If you are a windows user the link below should upset you. Or if you are a 'Windows User' using Vista you may not realize that your OS has a DRM on it! Meaning Microsoft can checkout what's going on on your computer at anytime! Are you cool with that? I'd hope you'd be up in arms over this knowledge.
What makes this all scary is the lack of places you can turn to. Puna needs more tech savy people.
Just one more reason why I'm happy to be a 'Mac User'!

You are not alone! Most of my career was supporting networks and pc's, but when it comes to our personal computers, it's Macs... I just want my computer to work, not to have to spend large amounts of time worrying about viruses, service packs and security updates!

If you read that big thing at the start of installing any Window’s product (and I bet most of you have not) you'll see it states you have no rights to expect any privacy when using Windows and they can harvest any information they want from your system and they can up or download anything they want. It's all there in black and white in the licensing agreement.
I bet everyone elected to ignore reading that agreement and now they are upset because it’s happening? If you rented a car and it states in the contract that they will be using a black box to record your driving to ensure you did not abuse the vehicle, what rights do you have to complain when they read the data?

Bob, you're talking Apples & Oranges here! When you purchase something, it's yours to do whatever...or so I thought? But when you rent something,car,house, you are limited on what you can do. Personally, I hate the entire concept of DRM.

Aaron, What about the pirates that would charge $25 for a disk that costs them a dime to manufacture. I would like to think that technological advances that make products more affordable would be passed on to the consummer. Instead, the recording industry engages in corporate piracy to gouge the public AND the artists. How do you feel about an industry that would first sell you a product with an exorbitant fixed price, then treat you like a criminal for trying to make a copy of YOUR disk? Savy artists now manufacture and market their own product over the internet, bypassing the recording industry. I am a shameless music pirate, and will tell you how I do it. The Hawaii public Library system has a wonderful eclectic collection of CD's. You can even order them online to be delivered to your local branch from any library in the state. AAAAAR me bucko! I also support new and lesser known artists directly by utilizing I-tunes (which allows you to make several copies)AAAAAAAAAAAAAArrrrrrrrrrrr. So Aaron, if the music industry stopped robbing it's customers, and treating them like criminals, DRM would be unnecessary.

Greg, the content industry is certainly not in the clear due the outrageous pricing for their product. But neither is the folks who pirate software, music,movies.Both groups are at fault as to why we are stuck with DRM.

Aaron, what do you think would be a good price to charge for online music per song? iTunes came out with a 99 cent price, and the record companies were still crying foul! The fact of the matter is the record industry has been price gouging us for sooooo long they don't want to give up those hefty profits. Personally, I think these record companies should only charge 25 cents per download. At 25 cents I'm willing to bet the piracy issue would go away. Music would be soooo cheap, who would need to use P2P technology?
DRM was not born out of piracy alone either. Even if people are illegally downloading music, what SONY did to their customers is down right dirty and crime too. A crime far worse than illegally downloading music!

How much I think the content should cost is irrelevant. As everyone has different opinion.
I'll leave this discussion on this note.If there is no financial incentive to create content, the world will be far worse off.
It may come to a point where we'll see less good movies,music,software because the
financial incentive is not there. Just something to think about when you pirate that
music, software,movies.

there is two sides of this issue even amongst people(artist) within the industries. A lot of people think their musice should be given away free on the Internet. These are the one's banking on people liking what they heard so much that they go out and purchase it.
Aaron, I'm one who's been paying out the ass for years for records(LP's) Cassettes, 4 track, 8 track. I've gone through the entire spectrum of technology myself over the years. All that stuff was running at 100 to 1000 % profit for record companies... the artist themselves got hosed on another higher plain than us the consumers . Have I ever downloaded music, movies, or software...you bet! Do I feel guilty? Not for one single second! But I'm not abusive either doing this either. As for music I have used the p2p technology to download maybe two hundred songs! I have never illegally downloaded any movies, but software is another issue entirely. I can't afford $500.00 for Photoshop, nor can afford that much for my Macromedia MX Suite(DreamweaverMX, flash FX,Fireworks MX,Freehand 10. Office is another bundle I couldn't afford...but I have them all because a lot people on vacation I taught surfing in Honolulu, went home and sent me copies of their software as tips. I even had a Microsoft employee I taught surfing go back to Redmond after vaction in the islands and send me Microsoft software for Macs.
You gonna tell me you have never,ever done this yourself?
