Fleas in the Park? - River - 06-09-2014

We're moving over this summer with two standard poodles and are wondering if fleas are going to be a problem. No ticks from what I understand which is really a huge plus! Any thoughts?

Ticks, fleas, mosquitoes, centipedes.

No snakes.

We have had no issues with fleas on our two dogs. Fire ants, on the other hand have almost blinded both of them, their eyes look like those of very old dogs with cataracts from fire ant damage.

The title to your post asks "Fleas in the park?"
Do you mean a county park, and if so, which one?
Or do you mean Hawaiian Paradise Park, and if so, what area of the approximately 15 square miles of HPP do you mean?

Near ocean. Dogs nearly always scratching despite vet pills, baths and flea ointment. Fleas, ants, ticks? .??

My brother used to live in Nuuanu on Oahu, which is a wet area. His dog would get fleas but I never saw a tick there. When he moved to Kapolei, which is a dry area, the dog got lots of both. The ticks were particularly horrendous. So here on the wet side you may not get as many ticks, going by my anecdotal evidence.

We have three dogs of decreasing size. We give them something called triflexis which costs about $20 per tab. We buy the one for a 120lb dog and split it. It not only stops the flea problem but worms, including the dreaded heart worm. It is the only thing that worked for us.

Big Island has snakes: http://www.explorebiodiversity.com/Hawaii/BiodiversityForgotten/Wildlife/Reptiles/Snakes%20-%20Blind.htm

But to answer the question, fleas will be a problem eventually unless you treat for them. You will need to start a heartworm regimen within a month of getting here. Also, intestinal parasites are everywhere. You will need to vaccinate for leptospirosis which isn't the norm for most places on the madland. I recommend you vaccinate for leptospirosis before you get here. So expect to treat for heartworm, fleas and ticks, and intestinal parasites on a regular basis, plus leptospirosis vaccinations for at least the first few years.

Edited to add, leptospirosis as well as the normal vaccinations, parvo is especially prevalent.

Don't forget to vaccinate your dogs for lepto too. There is more of it here than anywhere in the United States, and while the vaccines don't cover all the strains they do cover the most common.

Our dogs have been on our place for 5 years now and we still have no fleas, but no other dogs or cats come on the property.
