Coconut Oil - Guest - 06-19-2014

I cook with a lot of coconut il, as well as use it for other things around the house.

Does anyone know of anyone that sources it and sells it, or a good place to buy some ?

The Locavore Store in Pahoa sells locally made coconut and mac nut oil. It's on the pricier side, but you're supporting local. Otherwise, I think most grocery stores sell coconut oil. Costco in Kona is great if you want to stock up on it as they sell it in big jars.

When we were there last year, I asked the Hilo Walmart buyer to get it. Lo and behold, he called and said it was in. Louann brand which I have used for several years and its really good. I think it is about $6 for about a quart...much cheaper than health food stores. If you go and they still stock it, let me know.

Long, but interesting article on coconut oil.

Walmart's Louann brand doesn't get high marks.

All the article says is "strongly not recommended". No reasons why, except in comes in a plastic jar. I am happy with it.

There is a woman down at Hilo Farmers Market that has some really nice coconut oil she is on the side of the street where the Farmer's Cafe is. Also it is not too hard to make at home. There are "how to" instructions and videos online.

The best prices I have gotten for coconut oil have been on Amazon. 2 54oz jars for 42 bucks and free shipping if you have Prime. If someone hears of something better I would really like to hear it as I use quite a bit of it.

Are we sure that we want price to be the most important factor when buying coconut oil?

Refined coconut oil is made from Copra (dried coconut meat). Bleaching trays are used to remove contaminants that occur when the coconuts are dried. Next high heat is used to deodorize the flavor and odor. Sodium hydroxide is often added to prolong its shelf life. To obtain the most oil, some brands use chemical solvents to extract as much oil as possible. They may partially hydrogenate the oil, too, which means it will contain trans-fats.

One might want to at least get the unrefined oil.

CostULess had two brands available the last time I bought coconut oil there. It cost about $20 for 54 fl oz. The brand we got was Carrington Farms, which is unrefined....good stuff.
