Hawks in puna? - Guest - 06-26-2014

This morning our family was blessed with a viewing of a Hawaiian hawk. We noticed the bird about 7:45 a.m sitting on our fence just about 10 yards from our babies window. The hawk sat for about 20 minutes peeking down on the dog just 5 feet below. Nothing seemed to scare the hawk cause we had kids yelling at him or her to fly.

Just amazing how we were able to get so many pictures of the hawk with our old dog, also a mongoose that joined in the picture taking never took his eyes off this hawk. Lived here in Leilani a long time now, never have we been so blessed.

Anyone here know much about this kind of hawk?. We thought it might have been an owl at first for how big it really was. Anyway any info or history of the hawk would be appreciated for we are all just amazed how long we were able to watch him up close. Felt like we were at the zoo. Anyone believe in amakuas?. Thanks,Have a great day.

probably saw an I'o,

the Audubon society has a pretty good write up on the endangered hawaiian hawk.

it used to be on a few other of the other neighboring islands but is now only on the Big Island - not as rare as you might think but always a treat. They have little natural predators but are still in danger of losing their habitat.

heres some more on the I'o:

They are everywhere in Leilani. I see them everyday.

I see them (or at least one) up in Hawaiian Acres fairly often.

We have at least one I`o pair in town Keaau, often see them flying the thermals between the papaya fields & the Macnut fields (easy to spot, as the myna birds are normally squawking & diving into the pair, and the pair just swoop out of the way....

Back when we were in lower HPP, we had an I`o that would visit a hala tree in the yard, just after the mourning doves chicks hatched... the doves would always use the same branch to build their nest & the hawk would come & empty the nest... this was frequent enough that we would set up camera & did get some pretty close pictures of the I`o flying in & landing.... the nest was tucked a little out of camera view...

My friend is into flying radio controlled gliders. These are big toys, about 4' wingspan. He says that when he sees a hawk flying around he gets his plane right down to the ground. He's had hawks dive bomb and destroy more than one of his planes.
They control the high ground!

I'd love to see some of your pictures. Can you post them to photobucket or some other photo sharing site then share a link? As someone who isn't fortunate enough to live there (yet) I wish more of you guys would post pics of the things around Hawaii!

Carl

Carl, This picture sharing site was started a while back...and there was some spamming of it, so most of us let it be. Anyhoo, here is a link to some way back pictures:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/PunaWebFriends/

and yes, like flickr, it is a yahoo
and yes, some will not be able to access the photos
but it is (and was) a quick fix

Buteo solitarius or 'Io come in 2 colors, a solid brown dark color, or another one has a lighter blondish spotted chest area with darker outer areas. They are fairly common in Puna, from coastal edges all the way up the hill.

save our indigenous and endemic Hawaiian Plants... learn about them, grow them, and plant them on your property, ....instead of all that invasive non-native garbage I see in most yards... aloha

Thanks for the info Webber's, the hawk we saw was the blond one with light colors for wings too. We have seen many over the years, never anything like this morning though. I would send some amazing pictures or post them if I knew how. We love the links and pictures you folks have posted . We feel as if our dog had noticed the hawk directly above him the hawk would have dived down on him. No fear for this hawk was great to see for 20 minutes.
