Leather Couch - Guest - 06-27-2014

So the house we are buying in HPP is furnished but the couch is terrible. We want to replace it with a comfy couch, we have always owned leather, but someone told me leather here is god awful hot, and the climate ruins leather.

What do you own or prefer for a comfy living room couch to watch movies here ?

We have a blue two person loveseat/recliner just taking up space in our groumd floor guest room that I could probably be convinced to part with. It is heavy because it is a recliner, and you will need to move it yourself, and I would ask that you help move a light rattan loveseat downstairs for us (much lighter than the loveseat!) when you come get it.

I wouldn't ever get leather here, it molds virtually over night, especially any side that is against a wall or end table, if it is totally freestanding and you wanted to spend time every single week wiping it down with some sort of fungicide it might work. I would go for rattan, or if you can afford it, the vintage Koa plantation furniture, both come with replaceable cushions and cushion covers. Both breath well and don't harbor bugs.

I have a few (used to be) extremely nice, leather laptop cases. Leather is absolutely worthless here.

use craigslist - Kona and Waikoloa areas are the best for finding almost new island style furniture. The rich folk re-decorate all the time. I have some stunning Koa wood and rattan pieces, purchased for a fraction of new cost.

You are already buying a house? I hope you checked out the area at all hours of the day and night - wouldn't want to be near a party rooster, ya know? [Big Grin]

I don't doubt these experiences, but I've had leather couch and chair here always and loved them. It's true that pushing it tight up against a wall can be a problem in a damp house. In my current house, which has no mold problem, it's fine, and I have two leather couches now.

I don't care for fabric upholstery much.
Anyhow, it depends on how damp your house is.
I have certainly experienced the leather mold with bags, purses, and jackets that were stored in closets, in other houses, just the furniture got enough ventilation that it was fine. I guess I am lucky to have such a dry house now.

I've never wiped it down with any kind of fungicide. I'm amazed that the Luna climate is that different from Hilo.

So leather is not useless everywhere on the east side, but it is if you are living where everything molds.

I have a leather couch and have no problems with it.

We have a leather sleep couch and two leather recliners. We were told not to bring them, but we somehow couldn't part with them. Yes, they get mold on them, occasionally, and sometimes badly, but if we keep up with it, we stay one step ahead of it. DEFINITELY have to keep a fan going all the time in the room and have even put in a window AC unit (used rarely, but it does suck the moisture out of the air) AND occasionally use a portable dehumidifier. What works best, though, is keeping the air moving whehther thru fans or open windows or AC or dehumidifier. Also swear by Armor All Leather Care Gel (made for cars) - it protects the leather and gives the longest gaps between "breakouts." And agree with KathyH - don't butt it up against a wall or other furniture. So it takes more maintenance, so what. If you love it, it's worth it.

DT, I can't stand not having air moving through my rooms, and for sure that helps ... and I don't keep my closet doors closed. I also think the climate has been drier. I've also had more mold problems in single wall houses (two, one in Hilo and one in Papa'ikou).

I soon realized after moving here that island style furniture looks great and tropical, but it's not IMHO comfortable or built properly for posture. I'd much rather have a good furniture maker's product that is engineered properly. My couch I brought over here was made in Italy (not super expensive), and they really know what they are doing with upholstered furniture. It's not just a rattan frame with foam cushions.

People say not to bring antiques. My antique oak table has made it through 12 years in this climate and I do almost nothing to maintain it.

Books though, have not fared so well.

The Wooden Futon/COuch in our rental is killing our backs. So uncomfortable.

RE: Leather Couch - terracore - 06-28-2014

We have two leather couches and despite everybody's claims that they would mold and disintegrate upon arrival, they are both doing just fine after a few years. We don't have or use A/C but they are both in the living room where the windows have never been closed.

RE: Leather Couch - dayna - 06-28-2014

Like terracore said yes we have leather. Though I do wipe them down once a month when I move them to vacuum behind them... I use a weak vinegar solution and a washcloth.
