Pineapples with seeds - descodave - 07-03-2014
What would cause almost all of my pineapples lately to have seeds in them? Has anyone had success planting these seeds?

The variety you planted. Some have seeds and some don't. Some varieties have more seeds than others. The seeds of some varieties are more viable than others. It is quicker to achieve a fruiting plant when starting from pups than from seeds.
I recently purchased a pineapple that had more seeds and I currently have the seeds on a wet paper towel to see what happens. The above information is based on some google searching I did not too long ago.

seeds would seem to take a long time, its a bromeliad, they are easier from the keiki... IMO better to grow the keiki, its a clone, either from the top of the pineapple fruit, or a side shoot on the stem to the pineapple, or from a sucker from the base of the pineapple.

save our indigenous and endemic Hawaiian Plants... learn about them, grow them, and plant them on your property, ....instead of all that invasive non-native garbage I see in most yards... aloha

Pineapples are pollinated by hummingbird (illegal in Hawaii) and gypsy moth.
Nothing else fits the flowers.
Seeds will be hybrids, possibly interesting.

Thanx guys... But I still don't understand why EVERY pineapple we open has seeds in it? Are u saying it's the type of pineapple tops I planted , the way they're being pollinated, or something else?

No seeds without pollination; the flowers are too small for wind-borne pollen, and there's no hummingbirds in Hawaii, so you've got gypsy moths, probably something in the environment (too much shade, nearby attractive flowers, etc).
The flowering phase is very short...

This makes no sense; pollination happens during the (brief) flowering stage, which is the same no matter how the plant was propogated.

I'm no expert but coincidentally I had recently wondered about pineapple seeds myself, after buying some that had a noticeably large amount. My very brief internet research indicated that many varieties have few to no seeds, some varieties don't have viable seeds, some marginally viable seeds and some with more seeds and more viable seeds. I wouldn't know about moths or hummingbirds but I'll take your word for that. I'm "assuming" he got hold of one of the more seedy varieties and maybe the moths had an orgy too.

Don't know about Pineapple seeds. But, every time we eat a Pineapple, we plant the tops. We have been eating about one ripe pineapple every day for a while, and the are delicious! And, these types don't irritate the mouth at all. We just grow a few to eat, but, this year, we are having much success.
