East Hawaii Then & Now video 1974 & 2008 photos - Carey - 07-11-2014

Was talking to a neighbor about all the changes that have happened "recently" in Keaau town, and came across this youtube video comparing photos taken in 1974 and 2008 from Hilo town, Keaau town and Kalapana flow area, and the changes during the 34 years...

Enjoy, esp the music!:

Thanks for the video, easy to see not much has changed. (I did see the chevron gas station replaced by a McDonald's, yikes!) the before and after the storm pictures were awesome indeed Smile

Wainaku mill,
Kaikoo shopping-center,
old Kea'au town,
Kaimu beach.
Gone gone gone gone.

Wow, huge change for Kea'au. I was fascinated by the old pictures. Does anybody know where I can find some more?

very cool thanks for the link - I was on Maui back then (summers) - never made it out this far .... I do remember Napili (west Maui) when it was nothing but beach.....

I was here then, ate at a sandwich shop a couple of times in the first block of those Keaau shots and did my laundry there every week. When I moved back in 1999 the entire downtown was gone. Someone told me that a protest was started against new construction and it was all bulldozed on a Sunday morning, within a couple of hours. There was a church across the street then, right next to the PO. It was torn down in about 2002.

The beautiful yellow/green church (with the soaring ceilings, incredible wood floors, and memories memories, memories) that lived for years beside the Kea'au Post Office was not, in fact, torn down. It was moved. By a visionary local guy named Ken (who saved heaps of East Hawaii plantation-style redwood-homes as well). It currently lives, minus its steeple, on 14th. Between Kaloli & Paradise. A yoga-center for a good long time (though I haven't been by in a couple years. May have been sold/changed-hands?).

My neighbors were all talking about a steak house next to the Hongwanji mission... I have heard great things about this steak house before.... never have gotten the name of it... does anyone remember it?

Carey or anyone else remember that you tube link from about 5 years ago that showed trains and cars on elevated tracks while folks sat legs hanging off as they passed by ? Forgot who posted it.

I think it was a Dutch video ... Sort of yellowish ...
