What to do with used books? - Guest - 07-15-2014 I need to clean out my bookshelves, problem is the books aren't exactly popular fiction. Stuff I bought at Moe's and Cody's in Berkeley when I was in school, much of it paperbacks, not new ones -- which libraries don't like. It would be nice for an English or liberal arts major, especially a grad student, if they read paper books any more, but it's not bookmobile or public library material mostly. Anyhow, I don't want to search for owners bit by bit, I'd just like to put them somewhere they'd be more appreciated than at the Salvation Army. Ideas? Please tag on the topic if you too want to sell or give away books. What I'm looking to do is strip my books down to ones I can't bear to part with and still plan to read, and I want to make it easier to see the ones I want to read by making it so I don't have more books than I have shelf room. PS. If anyone has any serious interest in James Joyce, I have lots of books and criticism. I could easily sell that collection for something on the mainland, but I already priced mailing the books, and it would be $200 for shipping even at book rate. So if you know a student of Joyce ... RE: What to do with used books? - Andrew - 07-15-2014 Sell on Amazon or Hilo Bay Books? The used book store in Kona does pay cash. ___________________________ RE: What to do with used books? - missydog1 - 07-15-2014 I appreciate the suggestion, but when I have talked to the Kona bookstore on the island in the past, they only wanted beachy reads tourists buy or books that were Hawai'i related, only wanted Hawai'i or tropical gardening books, etc.. Also the money paid by used books stores is super low even for the ones they want. I sold a bunch of books in Berkeley before I left, for example, and got enough store credit to turn that into 5 books. Store credit was at least 3 times more than the cash offer, maybe more, I forget, but the cash offer was not worth the effort of taking them down there, and that was a metropolitan bookstore serving a major university. It costs me $60 to drive to Kona and six hours or so, to schlep books in and walk away with maybe $20 at best. That's the math. I'd like to give the books to someone with scholarly interests in the humanities who would like to grow their book collection. Someone who is working on a project and might like to have the books at hand, or who wants to read some literature (not on a Kindle). Does anyone here sell books on Amazon and know how much the shipping comes to for a paperback or a mid-sized hardback? I suppose I could do that, make a catalogue and start listing them, but it would be very time-consuming. It's not a rare book collection that would bring in lots of bucks. It's just books. RE: What to do with used books? - KeaauRich - 07-15-2014 Hilo Public Library Friends might accept books for their book sale fundraisers. See here: http://www.hilopubliclibrary.org/donations.html RE: What to do with used books? - Mimosa - 07-15-2014 Put an ad in Craigslist for Big Island in what ever category seems fitting. OR there is a used book store on Leilani b4 railroad on way to dump. OR take to recycle center in Kea'au. OR sell on Ebay and have the buyer pay the shipping book rate. Or talk to Mark at Maku'u Market on Sundays and from 10am to 1 in afternoon by Kurtistown Park where he sells the used DVDs for 2 bucks each. He would know if any one knows and he sells on Ebay some of our this n that's from time to time for a percentage. RE: What to do with used books? - Lin W - 07-15-2014 BookCrossing is always fun, though I'm not sure how well it will work with our relatively small population here. http://www.bookcrossing.com/ I am so much more like I am today than I ever was before! RE: What to do with used books? - ericlp - 07-15-2014 On the same subject...I am getting a huge stack of wired/popular science and other tech mags...Hmmmmm... It's time to recycle or find a place that might be interested in old magazines. Anyone know if someone would want em before I take em to the dump/recycle? ------------------------- To email me click on Link http://is.gd/QMfVEX RE: What to do with used books? - Carey - 07-15-2014 Kathy, Andrew also suggested Hilo Bay Books. One of my friends used to buy/sell with them a lot, and they used the HBB store credit plan, much like the Berkley store you refer to. It might be worth checking out. I have used half.com and amazon to buy & sell required college textbook, and the shipping is on top of the price of the book (I would only buy/sell with expedited shipping options, mostly because getting/receiving a textbook is time sensitive) RE: What to do with used books? - JG-HPP - 07-16-2014 You can donate to the Habitat for Humanity re-store on Manono St. behind the flooring place. No text books or encyclopedias though. 1 island 2 another RE: What to do with used books? - Rob Tucker - 07-16-2014 Isn't there a used book store in Pahoa? Across from the Cash & Carry... |
