The issue with many GMO food crops is the DNA actually used to modify the organism. Some of the DNA makes the food crop resistant to pests by creating its own toxin. And some are also modified to tolerate toxins used to kill the pests. What has been occurring is that mother nature has then mutated pests to be pesticide resistant necessitating the need for more or different pesticides. For food crops this is dangerous.
There is a huge growth industry for organic, non-GMO foods as the population becomes more informed of the dangers of GMO and non-organic food. The industry world wide in 2012 was $400 BILLION and next year, in 2015 is expected to be double, $800 Billion.
Additionally, there are farming consulting experts assisting GMO crop farmers on the mainland to transition to organic, non-GMO crops. Frances Pueo plans to sponsor subsidies and gain access to grants which will help GMO farmers transition to sustainable farming. And there is also the potential to use these GMO crops, especially papayas, to produce bio-fuel until the transition is completed. She cares about all farmers and wants to promote the Hawaii agriculture industry in the areas of high growth potential for the future which is organic and non-GMO. She wants to develop the "Grown in Hawaii" brand as a healthy, nutritious crop product grown in paradise.

Pueo and other candidates have been advised not to get into the "frey" on various online discussion groups. The vehicles to get their platform out is through the many forums, the survey/questionaires sent to them by many interest groups publishing the voters' guides and organizations and through interviews.
I know this does not reach all; however, there is limited time and focus for these candidates.

I have spoken to a majority of the District 5 candidates - save RJ, Tiffany, Doctor "socks" and the wall hugger. I have also spoken to all District 4 candidates - except for the incumbent.
ALL of the ones I have spoken to have indicated to me their reluctance at posting on various social media sites - namely PunaWeb for the following reasons:
1. Kathleen Hancock - (as 2 of he District 4 candidates stated to me - the "victim" turned "harasser"
2. Sativa - (The comments made to me about her are unfit to print)
3. Moderator of PunaWeb who seemingly does not care about the inordinate amount of salacious, libelous and "rumor mill" comments allowed to be posted.
I did not find one candidate I spoke to afraid to answer and questions.
They just wont be part of a "Hans Landa" type environment.

And you, like others, get to bring your point of view to the forum as well. Funny, most often I am accused of being too restrictive. Fact is the rules on Punaweb are simple. Keep it about Puna and/or Hawaii and keep it civil. It is not my job to sort fact from fiction.
