Hurricane surf anyone? - Peter Easterling - 08-07-2014

We surfed Pohoiki yesterday, a normal day of surf. Everyone was talking about going really early today before the wind arrives. Mostly I wanted to see and photo this event but I heard all beach parks are closed.

Did any surfer actually go to Pohoiki? Please describe what you saw. Clean conditions? stormy? Anyone out? 3rd Bay going off? And the big question, how big? Try to describe the height inactual feet from trough to peak. Like head high is 5-6 feet (not "1-2 feet Hawaiian").

Be very careful, everyone. Our coastline is unforgiving and deadly.

Ye surfing in a Hurry-cane with flesh slashing jagged lava shores. What could go wrong? Stay safe dude.

Unsurfable. 8-12' (double overhead} with some bigger sets. Blown out, choppy, confused, chaotic seas. Death surf.

life is short. enjoy it

Thanks for the report. I figured it might be stormy, as you describe, but one never knows. Didn't miss a thing. Whew.

I stopped by Pohoiki today around 11 AM. Lifeguards were on duty,

Bowls;
Mostly very clean with offshore breeze, 15ft faces. Three people out, occasional clean out sets. Very nice for the more advanced surfers.

Shacks; Same same, about 6-8 surfers out.

At 2pm the only people out are big wave tow surfers. 15 to 20 foot faces!
I got some insane video I'll try and upload later. Smile

The storm surge front is a couple hours away from beginning landfall. Nobody is going to be surfing when that starts happening. It looks like it is going straight into Pohoiki/Kalapana. It will be dark then.
