If you were to set up a stall at the Makuu Market - emorata - 09-30-2007
What would you sell to attract a regular/local following or even a tourist crowd.....would it be food, plants, service, art, tacky souvineers?
Just interested in finding out what you think is still missing at this venue...

My observation is that people are looking for produce, plants and junk primarily at this market.
My cards did ok but it wasn't worth it for me.
People must be doing ok though cause the same vendors are there week after week.

The soap making lady does good and the incense guy does good too, as does the statue guy.
There's a guy who sells hand-blown necklaces and little figurines in the forms of whimsical sea creatures, I think he's doing very well. He's been there several months now.
Today I met an artist named Edie. She does the most amazing paintings...very colorful and hawaiian looking...hope she does well. Her stuff is so magical.
And we all know the food vendors have great response...today I saw the Samoan food for the first time...looked yummy.

Do you happen to know how much a booth costs, and who to inquire about it? We are thinking of playing music there and putting out the hat. Also wondering whether our excess fruits would sell.

Maud, Covered booths are $20 and if you're not a "permanant" vendor it's first come first serve. Some people show up at midnight and wait to get a good spot. The gate opens at 5:30 am, you get a number as you go in. Numbers are called starting at 6:00. Usually there's a stall for everyone, but lower numbers get more of a choice.
There may be a problem with music, as the market has it's own stage and program. Talk to the Hawaiians, as they sometimes feature "guest" artists. I know the Lobo Del Mar folks had some problems relating to their music, and sadly, they are gone now. The market, especially from now to christmas, is a vibrant and busy venue for crafters and farmers. Good luck, hope this helps.
