Bob Herkes Passes Away - opihikao - 08-22-2014

Rest in peace, Mr. Herkes, condolences to his lovely wife. Found on Gil Kahele's site:

Received word today that former long time Hawaii Island legislator Bob Herkes has passed. He was a fierce legislator, sharp as a whip, member of the Hawaii Tourism Board and a good friend. Condolences to his wife Joanna. RIP Bob..Ahui Hou GK (Gil Kahele)

This man was the General Manager at the original Kona Surf, back in the day, long before politics. He was a long time kama'aina, who did his best for our Puna district long ago. Sometimes his position was not the "popular" one, however, he served all of Hawai'i in his own way.

Mahalo for your public service, Sir, and to your ohana, prayers for strength and sincere aloha.

Moe me ka maluhia lani. (Sleep in heavenly peace.)

R.I.P. Bob Herkes! I will always remember the man and his duck.

A lot of the new voters in Puna didn't know Bob Herkes or what an effective Senator he was for the people in Kau. But somehow or other, Bob got redistricted into Puna, where many didn't know him and so they voted for Ruderman instead of Bob. SO, IMO, in contrast, we got Senator Ruderman, who seems to be only able to run up special interest legislation, like SB2274, the Graham Ellis Sustainable living research bill, that was a bad thing and had NOTHING to do with sustainability.

I can tell you for a fact that Bob Herkes would have never introduced anything like SB2274. Bob was for all the people and he will be sorely missed.

Ruderman, who seems to be only able to run up special interest legislation

All interests are "special" to someone, even "keeping the country country".

He was a hotelier, a police commissioner, a County Council member, a state senator, a state representative and, more recently, a member of the Hawaii Tourism Authority. But most of all, Robert “Bob” Herkes was a dogged fighter for the people.

Herkes, 83, of Volcano, died unexpectedly Thursday morning at Hilo Medical Center, leaving family and friends in shock and in tears.

“Bob loved this island, and was a determined advocate for our communities and our people for decades,” said Mayor Billy Kenoi in a statement. “He was a caring and committed leader on the Hawaii County Council and at the state Legislature, and his efforts helped to build a better future for our entire island. I am proud to have called him my friend. We all offer our aloha, our prayers and our condolences to Jo-Anna, his sons Bob, Ken and Doug, and his entire family.”

“In my first few years in the Legislature, Bob was a very kind mentor to me,” said Sen. Josh Green, D-Kona, Ka‘u. “He cared deeply about his Big Island constituents and always fought hard to bring resources home to our community. I’ll miss him and his colorful personality.”

“Bob loved his work at the Legislature,” said Jerry Chang, a former Hilo representative who served with Herkes in the House. “He was hardworking, knowledgeable, passionate and cared deeply about making life easier for all of the people of our state.”

“Bob Herkes, what a guy. He’ll be sorely missed,” said Sen. Gil Kahele, D-Hilo. “He was focused and he was driven. He contributed so much to Hawaii and Hawaii’s people.”

Gee Sativa,
Do you think it's possible to honor someone without attacking another?
You spread your poison; But fortunately, it only works on the people who absorb it.

RIP Bob!

No, I can't snorkle, because I am living in the present and it is what I think. Isn't this thread on puna politics not punatalk? I voted for Bob Herkes, not Russel Ruderman, in the last election and I know the effects that redistricting had on Bob Herkes and the shape of our political climate here in Puna. We could have had a great Senator, like Bob Herkes, who listens to everybody, but instead, and I will repeat, we got a rookie senator, Russel Ruderman, who has spent his time, introducing legislation written illegally by a non/conprofit, who is taking advantage of the peoples trust.

That is how I see it and that is how I call it.

introducing legislation written illegally by a non/conprofit

Either file a lawsuit and prevail, or stop slinging mud. Please. Your choice.

Is it not true, that Graham Ellis and two attorneys, authored SB2274? One of the attorneys, being the ex planning director, Chris Yuen. Isn't it true, that Graham used his nonprofit, to lobby bill 2274, by using his so called nonprofit state organization, the Hawaii Sustainable Community Alliance (HSCA), which is not registered with the State, to funnel donations through their fiscal sponsor, the Hawaii's Volcano Circus, that would then be used by HSCA, to lobby politicians and officials to pass bills on the State and County level, which would suit his and a few of his associates needs? Which they thought it would be easy to do because all the other islands except Maui were exempt from SB2274. Perhaps Graham will come on and explain it to us.

We don't have to file a lawsuit, Graham is getting his, as we speak. Graham has cost his investors, over $50,000, by mismanaging the land, that belongs to Village Green Society (LTD), known as Belly Acres. Graham has cost or at least to date, threatened the Hawaii's Volcano Circus's (HVC), 501©3 designation, by abandoning HVC's mission statement and using their nonprofit status to lobby for resolutions and bills, which is a direct violation of IRS status. In fact, it is one of the number one reasons that will revoke your nonprofit status. Game over! He should have filed a 501(h) that would have saved the non/conprofit.
Again, we don't have to file a lawsuit. It is all on the desks of the people and agencies that investigate this kind of stuff. So go snivel to them if you think Graham is being dealt with unjustly.

But first, Graham better get legal, and the non/conprofit better get a good attorney. I mean a good attorney!

Great! Now that you've won the battle, PLEASE SHUT UP.
