9/21 Underwater & Coastal Dive Against Debris - Carey - 09-09-2014

Kapoho Vacationland Sunday 9/21 10-4
Iselle storm damage in Kapoho, Hawaii, clearing debris in tidepools and ponds
Volunteers are needed to conduct Underwater and Coastal Debris Cleaning, Large Debris Hauling, Kayak Support and Data Input at Kapoho Tide Pools & Ponds on Sunday, September 21, from 10am until 4pm. Volunteers are requested to meet at the Kapoho Kai St. entrance to Vacationland.

This is a beach cleanup & underwater cleanup due to Iselle storm damage. On Aug 7, 2014 winds and storm surge from Hurricane Iselle hit Kapoho. This area of tide pools and ponds now has decomposing storm debris. This debris has caused anoxic (low O2) conditions that have impacted the aquatic life within the Kapoho Ponds. There is also storm debris in the surrounding tide pools and coastline that require cleanup actions.

We are looking for volunteers that would like to Dive Against Debris, and to clean up shoreline, shallow pool and ponds to remove as much of the storm debris as possible. Shoreline and kayak support are needed for debris transport, if available. Important data collection of the debris items is also greatly appreciated, and can be done without contact with any debris.

Caution must be taken to insure the safety of all volunteers and the marine life in the tide pools and ponds.

All divers must be certified AND must contact Nautilus Dive Center:
(808)935-6939, or http://nautilusdivehilo.com/ prior to 9/19/2014
All volunteers should sign up by email to: kidsdivein@usa.com or use the web signup: http://www.projectaware.org/action/underwater-coastal-dive-against-debris-iselle-storm-damage-kapoho-hawaii-clearing-debris-tide

Not so much interested in diving (been too long); Do you need pick-up trucks and drivers to haul stuff away?

RE: 9/21 Underwater & Coastal Dive Against Debris - Obie - 09-10-2014

There is very little debris in the ocean fed tidepools. The surge washed everything inland where it stayed.
The ponds in people's yards are the ones that need help. Not sure if you need kayaks.
Antibiotics and antiseptics would be in order !!!

The Health Dept has tested these ponds and declared them safe from fecal contamination. They didn't test for anything else, but the rotting vegetation and dead fish seems to be the biggest problems .

Anyone who would want to haul away a truckload of greenwaste or debris from destroyed structures would be welcomed.

The county waived tipping fees but only for 1 month. That time has expired so it is very expensive now for us to have trash dumpsters emptied.

I let Carey know that we will open up our home for potty and showers after mucking around.

I also have trash bags.

There still is some debris on the ocean front, and there are some ponds that have a lot of debris (the storm surge pushed most of the contents of a house into one of the larger ponds, that has not been cleaned up )

We will need trucks, hauling, people with hip waders, people that can do data recording (no debris contact for them!), people that would like to lead teams, lots of "boots on the ground" (emphasis on the boots, make 'em rubber boots) to pick up & screen out debris from ponds & low areas. Hip waders will be invaluable if anyone has them.

Even school and scout groups to do coastal pickups, and record debris would be a great help

Also need some brave souls to figure out the large tree trunk that is tied off on the reef... it was tied to minimize the damage, but would be best if GENTLY dismantled & removed...

Some pictures of some of the work that may still need attention:

If you know anyone that wants to help, esp. groups, we do ask that a cleanup release form is signed by each participant & the parent, if under 18...

Also if have pool skimmers, or even fish nets to collect smaller debris off top of pond.

Why doesn't someone contact the mayor's office and find a way to get a waiver on the tipping fees for this endeavor?
Maybe a form from the mayor's office for each truck that goes out with a load that it shouldn't be charged.

RE: 9/21 Underwater & Coastal Dive Against Debris - Tink - 09-10-2014

Is there a way that somebody has contact with a fishing boat to pull it out to sea and over to the boat ramp for winching? It's more buoyant, hence "lighter" in the water for maneuverability if the reef allows for it with enough people and ropes to "steer" it. Water and chainsaws don't mix too well unfortunately, and the stability factor for operator is another. I know it may be in a spot that this is impossible, but just putting a thought out.

We need the volunteers to haul away what ever they pull out of the ocean or the ponds !!!

There have been many volunteers who have helped clean up and we are thankful and bless them.A lot of them clean up and pile it up in the right of way.We can't handle this anymore.

Please if you want to clean up,haul out whatever you remove !!!

Don't leave piles of stuff !!!!
