Thanks, the site is looking good. I enjoyed the lava tube photos. It looks like the site has intentions of further development. Very nice.

I read the History section which talks about VOG, which I assume contains sulfer gases.

How big a problem is volcanic gases in Puna? Which subdivision are impacted? Is Asthma a big problem on the BIG Island as a result?

How do people protect themselves? Are there any type of monitors which measure the air?

Good morning Adias,

The winds usually blow the Vog west or northwest, which keeps the eastside nice and clear. The last few weeks have been tough, as the winds have been blowing the stuff into Puna and Hilo. When driving up hwy 11 in the morning to work I can see the Vog billowing up from Puu’Oo. It looks like a big brush fire in the distance. As I get up to the Volcano Village area where I work it looks like landing in LA on a bad SMOG day. It didn’t bother me at first but I have notice I’ve been coughing more when I’m in all day. I can remember going to Kona a few months before the eruptions started in ’83. The sky was so clear all the time. I can’t imagine living over there now. The beaches are nice but it is too much for me to want to put up with when you still have to work for a living. I was just meant to be a Punatic!

<Is Asthma a big problem on the BIG Island as a result?>
I have moderate to severe asthma with allergies and can not stay for long or Live in the Kona district. When I was there for a month (I live in TX.)I got headaches everyday from it. I talked to the Dr. about it and she said yes it can be a real difficult problem there. Depends I suppose on the Puna side just how affected you are and knowing that there aren't many days there with it per year, it would most likely be your lessor cause of Asthma, the molds where it is wet if you have allergies to them and most asthmatics are bothered by them would be my worst and is a very common trigger. What are Your triggers for asthma?
Then you should find out if those are present where you will move to.

<How do people protect themselves?> Special teas made up by herbalists, The people who are the ownwers of Multi facetted houses Claire and sorry I forget their last name, but she is a herb specialist ans she makes the teas which used to be availble at Long's too. The other things are more obvious, stay out of it, stay indoors in the A/C, wear a mask, don't eat veggies that have it falling on them, get water that hasn't had it contaminated with it or a great water filtrations system. Common sense stuff like that. Hve you been tested and gone through asthma education or done research on the net about the disease? Because there is a wealth of info that it would be real hard to present here and we could only hit on a small portion of it.
<Are there any type of monitors which measure the air?> Puna has a station that in known for taking the air quality tests for the world! Do a google on it and you will come up with it.
When you find Claire's last name and the puna monitor for air Quality, could you please post them back here so others will know about them also. That would be a nice touch to help others too!

Check out the USGS for manu questions that I see posed here often, they have such a wealth of information here about waht types of things you are asking and many other people too..they even tell you about earthquakes and proper foundations, the chance of collapse of certain types of water catchment tanks and so on...
Theyare the EXperts in knowing what the best answers for you would be to make some of these decisions that you want to make your land purchase based on. I just gooled it and it brought up more sites on this subjects that you posed but this is a great beginning here....or you can put them in google and find more also.....it is a great find!
Enjoy!!

Here is an example of what I found that would surprise most the people on this site, since it references things I have not seem mentioned on the forums on Hawaii......Very interesting... I just put Air Quality Puna into the google search engine and wow, tons of stuff for you to read there, real good info, worth pondering for us asthmatics.
GOod luck with your search,
Lucy

Yeyah, I found the HA web site quite informative also. Didn't put me to sleep though. Must be in a manic phase LOL!

Actually sun starved here as we have had 9 inches of rain in 24 hours, not good on clay soils. Send in some scuba masks, a few Hawaiian canoes and paddles and we should be fine. Might need fins too!

Went by the dam and it looks like Lake Oroville is outputting 500,000 cubic feet per second. The roads are blocked but the spillway is moving so fast it creates vertigo. Hope the levee systems to the south hold.

Well I loved the all pics on the HA website of the lava tubes but especially the volunteer fire department! Looks like a real together set of fine folks to me and I look forward to being neighbors with this band of eclectics and all fellow Punatics!

Gene and I wish you all a healthy, prosperous, and expeditious year(building wise) for 2006!

Hey isn't it great all the newbies adding to the mix! It keeps on getting better and better! Welcome newbies and thanks for your input and experiences and adventures also!!
