tasty flashback - Beachboy - 10-04-2007
as I was walking through Sears in Hilo yesterday I "flashed" upon the days of my youth when going into Sears, or any other big dept. store there use to always be a Infrared lamp with a wheel going around below it with all these tasty nuts! The aroma always got to me, forcing me into begging my mom to buy some heated cashews.
My question to you folks is,do you all remember these small tables with the great aroma of roasted nuts? Does anybody see these anymore? The lamp/table that is? I wanna try to locate one. Does anybody know how I'd do that?

Mauna Loa Mac nut farm sells hot nuts, or at least they used to...I haven't been out there since I cleaned carpets for them about 2 years ago...

haven't heard of the warm nut thing since there used to be the old wolworth storms in the 80's.....that would be a nice thing to have around....we still have people roasting chestnuts at our local farmers markets when its cold...although i get to pick the chestnuts from the neighbors tree for free now and roast them myself..its da best....

When I lived in Southern France, in winter you would often see a old guy with a cart roasting chestnuts, which were about 50 cents. He would wrap them in newspaper. They would be steaming! Hot nuts for days!
Flash forward to my last trip to Puna when I saw that guy shimmying up a coconut tree. Absolutely amazing. And for some reason, I thought back to winter in the Pyrenees, even thought it was 83 degrees, and balmy.

exactly Noel! All the old Dept Store like Woolworth, Sears, etc,etc..use to always sell hot nuts when I was a kid.
Those were infrared lights right that were used to keep them warm, correct? I'm trying to hunt something like one those setups down...I have an idea I wanna tryout!

great....can't wait to try out your roasted macadamia nuts....roasting on an ooopeeeen fiiiire!!!! Are there other nuts grown commercially in hawaii?

You can buy the bulbs at HD, nearly $10 if memory serves.
Roasted macnuts? I'd be interested in learning more about that.

OK, I remember them too, so I checker ebay,
They have a few hot nut vending machines (5c, look more like bubble gum machine) that have a red light. They also have a couple of popcorn maker looking nut roasters & a roaster that attaches to a BBQ
Nothing like the red light box with piles of nuts....
