Drought conditions here in Puna. - Guest - 09-25-2014 These resent weeks have been abnormally hot with drought like conditions. Could the hurricane or lava flow activity have anything to do with these conditions? Has there been any kind of scientific studies on possible short-term climate change for such events? Could the vog flatten out clouds or dry them out? Could Puna run low or short on water if the lava crosses hwy130? Could geothermal supply lower puna water too?. Sorry for the many off the wall questions, looking forward to your replies, suggestions, views, 2-cents, and opinions. RE: Drought conditions here in Puna. - leilaniguy - 09-25-2014 It's September here and usually drier and warm. Nothing really unusual, the lava is hot, but has no effect on weather patterns, except may be Pyrocumulus clouds. RE: Drought conditions here in Puna. - Rattlestaff - 09-25-2014 Climate change has been causing serious effects all over the world, from serious droughts causing severe fire seasons, mild winters with no snow in areas that usually get lots of snow.I don't see how Hawaii would miss out on it. RE: Drought conditions here in Puna. - MattKarma - 09-25-2014 The excessive rains *just before* may have changed the ground conditions, allowing the vent to open, the system rained itself out hence dryness now. Just a Theory. RE: Drought conditions here in Puna. - lavalava - 09-25-2014 Well, if it's not sunny in late September - it's raining. Be real clear about which you would prefer. RE: Drought conditions here in Puna. - Guest - 09-25-2014 In the past we have expected hurricanes that seem to go around us then leave dry weather sometimes for months after. Not sure if the kau desert has seen less or more precipitation since the summit started its eruption in 07?. Some could say The island has been somewhat dryer since the vog has become a concern. Lots of trees are showing signs of drying out or dying from possible drought conditions. Did read an article about a rare lightning storm we had due to the storm mixing with our volcanic energy or gasses sometime last year. Wondering if the volcano could alter or change weather patterns if they are capable of changing a storms capabilities. Maybe a second catchment tank could be useful in some secluded times that we may be approaching?. For more farming or fire fighting if it stays dry. RE: Drought conditions here in Puna. - TomK - 09-25-2014 August, September and October are always warm and humid here. The trades get cut off and temperatures rise especially as the sun is still strong and the land warms up. This is not new and personally I really dislike this time of year. 2014 has been a bit warmer in my experience, maybe that's due to climate change or it's just "one of those years". Weather and climate are different beasts with weather being local and a short-term thing whereas climate is long term. Hurricanes form in the Pacific during the summer and fall because the ocean is warm and provides the energy and moisture. El Nino and La Nina also affect this since they are driven by ocean temperatures. That's climate. The volcano can produce very local weather effects on a short time scale. That's weather. The two should not be confused, and the volcano is not causing a drought. RE: Drought conditions here in Puna. - MarkP - 09-25-2014 I wondered what that hot yellow thing in the sky was. The plants here in Eden Roc seem to like it though. I sometimes actually feel rather warm here. Probably due to all the heat and sun, I noticed algae growing in my catchment tank. I built it out of a couple of cattle panels making a hoop 10' in diameter and lined it with 6 mil black poly. Cost about $300 all told. Felt really proud of myself. Tried vacuuming it with a small vacuum cleaner nozzle mounted on a piece of PVC pipe with a garden hose siphon. Barely touched it and I seem to have caused it to leak. So I'm in the market for a real galvanized steel tank. I know of Waterworks in Hilo and Island Catchment in HPP. Is there anywhere else I should look? RE: Drought conditions here in Puna. - Mimosa - 09-25-2014 In the late 1960s it was bone dry for 14 months. In the early 1970s it was bone dry for 8 months straight. In the late 1970s it rained non stop from end of july till day before christmas ,some days 5" of rain, some days 10" of rain. It is also the beginning of an El Nino event, the La Nina event of the past 10 years or so was dry ish. The trades will return and we will have weeks and weeks of rain once again and the subject will be when will the rain stop. This is normal ...........get used to it,has nothing to do with climate changes or magma,it is what it is.Maybe the rains will be mostly the northern islands and miss this island entirely. Up here in glenwood we have been getting nightly rains, lower in puna not so much,it is also cooler up here which is a blessing. This is all about normal............. Yes on the dry side but not abnormal . Life is a Blessing. RE: Drought conditions here in Puna. - Johnd - 09-26-2014 quote:Could not agree with your more on that one. I think you have a very good point, that is why I think we should have tried sea water on this flow jdo |
