Highway patrol in Puna? - Guest - 09-30-2014
Last night I was on my way home from hilo to pahoa around 1:00 A.M. Had a feeling that I might see an officer working these hard early morning hours, especially in the construction area. What I saw on our only highway to and from keaau and pahoa was 6 nice new police vehicles and only three other vehicles besides mine. The vehicle behind me by the keaau transfer station was pulled over by police. Another car was pulled over by hpp heading towards hilo.
What can the police see at night when one drives by to warrant the pull covers?. Are DUIs common here in Puna? What are the fines for drinking and driving in this area? Why is alcohol so easy and prevalent to get here in Puna with many bars and stores selling it at such high costs? Could the police fund a designated driver and van instead of pay so many at odd hours of the morning?.
Thankfully I don't drink alcohol to really worry to much. The double yellow lines in that road construction area are psychedelic put down by the little munchkins in the movie wizard of oz. How can one drive strait through such a mess of painted lines drunk or not?. My overall impression was an overkill in police presence and entrapment is happening along our only highway. The last time I remember a drunk driver hitting and killing an innocent person was in hilo done by a fireman or officer named Mossman or Mathison something like that.

I have a friend who is a bartender in Hilo who said he gets pulled over all the time driving home to Puna from work early in the morning (2-3:00). The police pretty much assume that anyone driving right after the bars close is impaired. When we lived in Keaukaha roadblocks were a constant on the weekends. Drunk driving is pretty common here, and the police know it, and they know where they can scoop up a goodly number of impaired drivers without much trouble. They also do group actions like that right around the time safety stickers registrations expire every month.

Whats this have to do with the lava flow emergency?
I think police policing drunk drivers is a better use of time than hunting down the deadly pakalolo plants.
I remember earlier this year someone was killed by highway 11 / keaau town pretty sure the offender was drunk. Someone with a better memory than me probably recalls the pertinent details.
Sounds like you dislike police officers.
I would be happy to hear about an increased police presence in Puna, especially in this time of emergency.

Catching drunks is entrapment?
During the week of September 22, 2014, through September 28, 2014, Hawai#699;i Island police arrested 21 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Ten of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Two were under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 863 DUI arrests compared with 977 during the same period last year, a decrease of 11.7 percent.
There have been 1,150 major accidents so far this year compared with 1,032 during the same period last year, an increase of 11.4 percent.
So far this year, there have been nine traffic fatalities on Hawai#699;i Island compared with 22 during the same period last year, a decrease of 59.1 percent.

Those figures also don't include any deaths, accidents, or arrests on "private" roads. Drinking and driving are common here, and virtually no one lives within walking distance of their favored drinking sites, so the drunks are driving long distances to get home.

Drunks driving have killed and/or injured way too many people. I'm thankful for the polices vigilance with that problem

I find it beyond comprehension that any rational person would be against DUI enforcement, well except for those that tend to be offenders.
