Notice for Pahoa Tree Lovers - mearth11 - 10-13-2014

I was at the Civil Defense center this morning and learned that the Fire Dept. wants to cut down the huge, old monkey-pod trees outside the Pahoa community center. They say they will need to park the fire engines in that lot after the lava crosses the highway and that the trees are in the way.

I don't know what, if anything, can or should be done about this, but it sure seems a shame to lose such beautiful trees for a parking lot -- even if it is for the fire engines.

Thought I should let people know . . . .

The county seems to love cutting down trees. Parks & Rec has destroyed dozens of the most beautiful trees on the island.

Oh no!

Some days those trees are my favorite part of downtown Pahoa. Is it definite those gorgeous awesome trees will be pau?

Not to argue against emergency services these days, but can't the fire dept. park their trucks elsewhere?

RE: Notice for Pahoa Tree Lovers - csgray - 10-13-2014

Seems like they could park those fire trucks at the pool just as easily, plus they would be behind a second set of fences. This is not thinking things through, those are beautiful old trees, and an important part of Pahoa's beauty, if they chose to CD could find another option than cutting the trees down.

My husband says they just want to get rid of the trees to keep the vagrants from hanging out near their shiny fire trucks.

Wish I could move that monkeypod to my place. I love those trees.

If it didn't make me itch so bad, I'd love to have some of the wood!

There is so much equipment being used for things now, just clear a new parking lot. Those Samanea samans are awesome, and shouldn't be cut down.

RE: Notice for Pahoa Tree Lovers - kalakoa - 10-14-2014

just clear a new parking lot

Use the cleared lot at the corner of Apaa where HELCO was staging equipment post-Iselle.

It's already there.

I just took a picture of that tree yesterday (from Luquin's parking lot) with the plume in it's background. It's beautiful.
I hope they reconsider.

Would someone be so kind as to upload some picts of those trees.
I do so love trees and what they do for us.
Thanks......
