Motion Picture Film of Hawaii 1924 - kander - 10-15-2014 Just found this gem on the Internet. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yhPk_JYqnVw Some Honolulu, some big island. RE: Motion Picture Film of Hawaii 1924 - Amrita - 10-16-2014 quote: WOW AWESOME! Goes to show that our eruptive episode today in minimal compared to then. What a great experience to watch. So much has changed unfortunately not for the better. Aloha Mahalo Nui Loa Kander. RE: Motion Picture Film of Hawaii 1924 - PaulW - 10-16-2014 Thanks! Skip to 7:00 for the Big Island. There was a huge explosion at Kilauea in May 1924, I wonder if this was filmed before that? If I remember correctly, that explosion marked the end of the lava lake shown - which had been there for over a century. RE: Motion Picture Film of Hawaii 1924 - The_Saints - 10-16-2014 My great-grandparents arrived in Hilo in 1920. It is always nice to see film and photos showing how it looked to them. It is as close as I will ever get. Too much has changed since then. Thanks for the treat. RE: Motion Picture Film of Hawaii 1924 - shay - 10-16-2014 thanks kander! RE: Motion Picture Film of Hawaii 1924 - Kenney - 10-16-2014 That was great! Mahalo for posting! RE: Motion Picture Film of Hawaii 1924 - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 10-17-2014 Really nice! Kilauea had a good sized lava pool back in the 1920's. Here's another, if more recent, historical documentary just added to Netflix Streaming: 30 for 30: Hawaiian: The Legend of Eddie Aikau http://www.netflix.com/WiMovie/70273674 RE: Motion Picture Film of Hawaii 1924 - imwithstoopid - 10-17-2014 Thanks much for the link. A train? Rail Road ave? Would be nice to be able to take that ride. Amazing Sugarcane operation. Don't be an sesquipedalian, Eschew Obfuscation..... Sometimes, when I see the neighborhood children make small discoveries of their own, I wish I were a child. With apologies to Dr. Seuss RE: Motion Picture Film of Hawaii 1924 - Midnight Rambler - 10-17-2014 That train is from the Big Island too; the Oahu railroad didn't have anything like that! Pretty sure the bridge at 2:20 is the old Halakau span. The shots of sugarcane fields kind of looked like Hamakua as well. RE: Motion Picture Film of Hawaii 1924 - pahoated - 10-17-2014 We think it is paradise now, it was really paradise back then. It was also the roaring 20's. Too late for Oahu but Hawaii island can be preserved and restored to be more like old Hawaii. "Mahalo nui Pele, 'ae noho ia moku 'aina" - kakahiaka oli |
