Anyone butchering chickens? - Frankie Stapleton - 12-10-2014

My yard in Nanawale has become chickens' Grand Central....lots of vegetation for them to hide in, sleep in my trees, etc. Is there anyone in the farming community who harvests the chickens? I love to eat chicken but am gutless and can't make myself decapitate, pluck their feathers and harvest them. It would be a great service to provide here as a lot of my elderly friends have the same problem I do. BTW, there are 3 very handsome roosters. I'm planning on buying a trap as the Keaau humane society's traps are seldom available. Please let me know as I'd rather see them feed people than just add to the humane society's death count. Phone 965-8945....mahalo nui

I think our freezer is full but I'll ask the wife if we or anybody we know are interested. We are clearing out our property of roosters this weekend so nothing would happen before next weekend regardless. IF you are going to start trapping them for food use, may I suggest that you separate the roosters from each other or else they will just injure each other. Generally you can put as man hens together as you want and its OK to put 1 rooster in with each batch of hens unless he starts injuring them. Ideally while you are trapping and holding them you want to feed them as much high protein feed (called "meat bird" at the feed store) as they want and of course never let them run out of water, and give them shade and someplace to get out of the rain.

I've heard that the feral chickens are like "rubber chickens" when it come to eating. Are these feral or a brood just gone wild? I would love to have some chickens if you will be trapping them (for eggs & bug control). My email is mmbvd7@yahoo.com IF you will be collecting them and need a place for some to go. Hubby doesn't really want a rooster, but I wouldn't mind having a rooster.

Best wishes

I ate a feral rooster before. Put him in the crockpot for several hours and it tasted fine. A lot less meat on it than a store bought chicken though, that's for sure.

If anyone wants some non laying hens for eating, my six hens are past their prime. I can't bring myself to kill them on my own.

I checked around and everybody seems to have more roosters or feral chickens than can handle. We still have several we have to deal with ourselves. Please don't give up. I know a lot of people just shoot them or whatever to stop the crowing and toss the carcass into the garbage or the compost pile. That is wrong on so many levels I won't even get started. Another option to consider is trapping and relocation. Or learn how to take advantage of this free source of meat yourself... just an idea, though I totally understand why people don't like to. We were all like that at one time.

Can you put them out to pasture? Their new job on the farm being bug patrol, etc?

RE: Anyone butchering chickens? - shave_ice - 12-17-2014

terracore, they are totally free range. The problem is they have been so spoiled in the past, that the minute they are out of food they come up on the lanai pooping everywhere and making a racket until I fill their food again. All day they just sit under a bush or under the truck. They don't even bother looking for bugs anymore. It's ridiculous. I keep threatening them that they are going to be dinner, but, well, I am chicken so to speak.

A buddy and I are coming over soon and it is possible that we could take a few from both sources, both for pasturing and for eating. We will have to see if he already has a wild pop. and go from there. Won't know til probably after the 8th.
