red road has seen many changes recently. - Guest - 12-11-2014

For those of you who can't seem to find red road or don't know where it is. Well it is a very special and unique road from kalapana to Wawa along the Puna coast. This road was narrower back in the day, also was rarely traveled especially by tourists. Now the red cinder road has been replaced by blacktop, which has made for a much smother drive of late.
I have to admit that I have reached speeds of 80 mph or faster on a few occasions on a stretch or two of red road. Of course this was well over 6 months ago and more like 10 years ago. With the added tourist attractions along the coast now we do see more traffic than before.

When the road was red, narrow, and loaded with pot holes the speed limit was 55, the drive was fun though. Now we have a very wide, smooth, clean black top road, yet the speed limit is a grandma grandpa snail pace of 30 mph. What a joke and why has this not been changed back to 55?. Who crashed, who died, and where can we reach speeds of 80 mph now? My car likes speed and so did I, we both seem to respond better after a good dose of speed, zero to sixty in?
Now of course the old red road mostly single laned also had areas where you would have to stop and pull over to allow the passing of coming traffic, once in awhile. The old red road also seemed to have a lot more producing mango trees years ago. Anyone know or have pictures, or could kindly share some history of red road from its past?. We would appreciate it. Maybe a speeding ticket story?.

Well the first few written responses about red road changes seem to have come from those who have interests in the continuing changes. My guess would be that Obie and desert eagle either own property or homes along the red road relying on tourism for rent or property values. Maybe even patrol the new blacktop 30 mph road for speeders. Well don't worry I don't speed through your new highway anymore. Back when I was a kid or young adult that was my type of highway to get somewhere with a smile. Now you old fogies can have your highway at 30 mph for your personal interests of money and more money.
30 mph is just to slow on a few of the long stretches of that road. Some private roads carry 35 mph signs. The other day while driving the blacktop road down near secrets, I slowly got passed by a ten speed bike . We could have carried on a conversation for some time as we were close in speed for what seemed like 5 minutes. The way he passed me then looked back and smiled made me think of how slow this 30 mph really was.

Red road is too pretty to go fast. I agree for the most part, the speed limit is too low, but there are some areas that 30 is about right like where you go by the parks. If you want to drive fast, there's Saddle road.

We've tried to get a bike lane on it for years, still to no avail. That's one of the most beautiful roads in the world. Picking up a little speed if you are commuting is one thing but not a good idea to go too fast because bike tour companies bring inexperienced bikers there often. The red road has quite a few blind hills and narrow areas, driving defensively there is only common sense, except to a few teenagers.

Agree eightfingers. Most areas on the former red road like near the park the speed limit is fine. The area between 4-corners and secrets is just to slow, also the area between kalapana dump and kehena beach is to slow.
The new saddle road is so nice that you can sometimes not even be aware that your speed has climbed over the limit. It has also been laden with police as a speed trap since the changing of the name. I don't think saddle is the name of that road anymore? Maybe a good name changing should be in order for the old red road as well. (Kenoi highway) or uncle Roberts?.

Drivers going 80 and bicycles is a good mix ?

The speed limit was lowered because they narrowed the driving lanes to allow for a bike lane in each direction after the repave.
