Russell Ruderman's fund raiser - kjlpahoa - 12-20-2014

Russell Ruderman appears to be starting the New Year with a fund raiser. For what, I can only guess that it is for his war chest for his re-election. Is he holding it in his own District or even on the Big Island; NO!!!, he is holding it in Honolulu on January 8, 2015 at the Mandalay Restaurant. My question is, Is he holding the fund raiser in Honolulu to go after the big corporate monies, or the Mainland Companies, or the support of the Oahu Legislators? Whatever the reason, has he given up on this own District or County for his financial support? Maybe he has lost faith in his own constituents and feels it necessary to buy votes with outside money. For a Senator who not long ago stated his concerns about Senators on the take, this certainly appears that he now wants to also be obligated to big money concerns. So much for home rule.

"Politician goes where the money is". Really? Act surprised.

Didn't the Mayor and Council also accept lots of off-island campaign funds?

Is he taking money from Monsanto?

No, I guess that will be his opponent. Russell will need financial help. Good luck Senator!

Do you mean 'Why is he holding an Oahu fundraiser like every single other state legislator?' Are you also questioning the other 75 Senators & Reps? Or do you have special rules for Rudderman?
Do we have publicly funded elections, or is fundraising still an unwelcome but necessary part of politics?

RE: Russell Ruderman's fund raiser - Chunkster - 12-20-2014

So "everybody does it" makes it OK? Realistically, however, he doesn't have any choice if he wants to get re-elected, which is something I personally don't want to happen. He's a politician. That's what politicians do. Get over it and criticize his policies, kjlpahoa. There's enough there to keep us busy!

Have you ever considered that O'ahu has a lot of environmental nonprofits that have their main offices located there? That represents a lot of people who are probably willing and eager to support Russell, and having a fundraiser there will make it easier for them to do so. And also to hear his message. Just because he is having a fundraiser there does NOT mean that he has sold out, OR that he will not have any here, OR that he is wooing corporate money. Get real. Look at his record. He has not wavered from his promises or his platform. That's because, although he is a State senator he is basically not a politician. He is a man with integrity and has walked his talk unwaveringly for the 35+ years that I have known him.

Mahalo Rene,our thoughts exactly .
Russell is good people - Proud to have him represent Puna and Big Island .
Oahu is the hub of many state doings and environmental non profits .
He will come back and hold his fund raisers here as well.
We have known Russell 30+ years on a personal level .
Good people are rare in our state political system .
We should be proud of him as our Puna / Big island ears and eyes .

Ruderman represents the poorest districts on Hawaii and Hawaii island. His voters are in these districts (he only has one constituent, by his own admission). It is the timing that is callous, especially to south Puna. Here he is, rubbing elbows with his moneyed cronies in Honolulu, taking careful instructions on how to be their sock puppet, while the citizens of his districts deal with a state of emergency. At least, Gil Kahele holds fundraisers in Hilo and he understands appropriate fundraisers which people in south Puna don't seem to understand. What do Honolulu environmental nonprofits have to do with representation for Puna? Some of you claiming to be Democrats in south Puna are obviously nothing of the sort, and appear to be radical teapublicans in democrat slippahs. For one of the whiners about Kenoi and others taking off island campaign money, exposes Ruderman as an opportunist, although based on what he hasn't been able to do, appearing hypocritical and ineffective.

Who in Oahu is going to really go to Russell Ruderman's fundraiser? Bob Petricci?

Why would anyone waste their money?

Ted, please knock off the teapublican comments every time you have an issue with something. It is really getting old. Besides, all of the issues Hawaii has right now, can be blamed directly upon the ironclad rule of Democrats.

Ruderman represents the poorest district in the county, if not the state. He couldn't possibly raise enough money from the paranoid punatics to get re-elected so he has to go where the money is. I don't like him, but I respect his decision to raise money on Oahu. It is common sense.
