Shopping tips - PaulW - 01-04-2015
I know it's been done before, how about an updated one.
When is this "welfare week" when the stores are crowded and the prices are up - first week of every month?
I read recently about 5 Dollar Fridays at Safeway, not sure what that is but I'll try it out.
Seniors Day every Tuesday at Ross - 10% off everything for 55-plussers.
I assume cheapest gas on the East side is at Safeways but what do you need for that - just the free club membership or coupons?

Cheapest gas is HFN using a credit union to pay. HFN prices are already low but using a credit union gets you .20 cents off per G!

You don't need the membership for the Safeway gas. Pay with a debit card and they knock 10 cents off per gallon.

All of your questions regarding Safeway and their club card can be answered by going to their website: http://www.safeway.com/
The club card membership is free. For each dollar you spend, you accrue one gas reward point. One hundred reward points equals 10 cents off per gallon of gas during your next fill up. Depending on how many points you accrue between fill ups, you can save quite a bit when you do have to fill up your tank. Your gas reward points are valid for a month. The website will tell you when your rewards are due to expire.
Their weekly ad comes out every Sunday. Use care when checking out their sales...certain items are only on sale on Fridays. If you click on the sale item it will show which days the item is on sale. If you decide to shop on Fridays at Safeway, my advice is to go early...some sale items are completely cleaned out if you wait too long in the day to shop.
In addition to the weekly ads, there are also 'just for u' and 'personalized deals'. These deals are tailored to items you have purchased in the past.
We don't buy all of our groceries at Safeway, but sticking mainly to the sale items there saves us money.

Another way we save money on groceries and household items is by shopping from Amazon using their 'subscribe and save' feature. Certain grocery and household items are available for this feature. If you purchase five items a month that are 'subscribe and save eligible', you save an additional 15% off the already discounted price. Also, if you are an Amazon Prime member, many of the items available offer free shipping even to Hawaii. I have compared the prices on many items from Amazon 'subscribe and save' to what it would cost me to purchase on island, and many times it's a better deal for me to buy it through Amazon. Of course, it depends on what you're shopping for, and your mileage may vary.

Thanks Wahine. I also purchase stuff using my Amazon Prime membership, but probably not as much as I should. My purchases include gadgets, phone accessories, guitar straps/strings/picks, printer ink, vacuum bags and other kinds of cleaning stuff.
What kinds of items do other folks save money on using Amazon Prime?

Target actually has really good discounts on things like cereal, frozen foods, canned goods, milk and cheese that first week of the month, and they do not jack up their prices on other stuff that week. Their card gets you a discount on all purchases, plus they will send you a gift card for $25 -50 on a regular basis. It seems like KTA and the Foodland/Malama Market/Sack and Save conglomerate do raise prices for the week people get their EBT cards. Cost U Less has good deals on some things, and their meet department are willing to cut to order. Almost everywhere has one day a week for senior discounts, and Island Naturals has a rotating discount on Sundays, vitamins and supplements one week, everything discounted a different one, Health and Beauty products on another and so on. KTA has unannounced discounts early in the morning that are worth looking floor if you are there when they first open.

Amazon has a "warehouse deals" section of items (usually groceries) that are approaching their expiration dates. It changes all the time so you have to check in frequently. They are usually case deals, but not always. Recently I got a bunch of BBQ sauce for 36 cents a jar with free shipping. Sometimes I see a deal that is just ridiculous but I pass on it anyway (what am I going to do with 6 jars of expiring mustard even if they are almost free). I have shopped for TP and paper towels at amazon in the past but find that I usually get a better deal at Target.
We get most of our parrot food from Amazon but Target is cheaper for things like dog food. Almost all of our livestock medicines come from Amazon.
