Narrow long cracks in pahoehoe - descodave - 01-08-2015

Hi,
We are hand clearing our pahoehoe lava & going to plant in the larger cracks/holes, but not sure what to do in the cracks that are long & narrow but contain enough soil that weeds keep growing there? Could something like mondo grass or ? be planted in those areas as a weed preventative (don't want to use a lot of herbicides)? Thanks for your input!

Anything without a big root system should work. You can do green onions or herbs if you want edibles, or annual small flowers (marigolds, allysum, etc. or ferns - we have beautiful native maidenhairs. Or a combination of the above. Depends on how wide your narrow cracks are, too.

All mints do really well in areas like that and a little soil. They help keep weeds down while adding some fragrance to the air. Also citronella would probably do well while keeping the mosquitoes back. With spring just around the corner you really can't go wrong, anything should fill those cracks and be growing in no time. Any idea how old the flow is or how thick?

We are on 5th & Makuu in HPP. Some say the lava is 400 years old in this area. I'm not sure how to tell how thick it is...sorry.

Right on descodave great place or area to be living. The weather is awesome down there and your trade winds are welcome relief from the heat. The reason I asked about how thick is because in some cases great soil may be buried only a few feet below the hardened lava. I often wonder how thick the lava is out in places like royal gardens cause the soil there was awesome back in the day. low flat areas like the bottom of ppark are probably thicker than sloped terrain.

I just poked a line of Ti in a lot of ours, and it gives people a heads up so they don't get an ankle break if they step in one. My pleumeria like the cracks too, probably because they don't need much soil/water and don't mind the heat of the lava. Neither really stop the weeds though. Good luck!

Thanks, Kenny! Do your plumerias actually keep their leaves & bloom?! (Usually they don't on this side of the Island!)

Yes! They do bloom! I had to buy land bc I had so many cuttings to plant from all over the island. They do lose their leaves for a period every year, but I think that's normal, for here anyway. They also get a lot of fungus on the limbs if they don't get enough sun, but I just scrape it off the ones I can get to. They bloom anyway. Every color has a different scent. Lovely!
