safety checks for car and also catchement Q - dreamoutloud - 01-08-2015

Hello! We will be there in just a few weeks now! yay!
Just wondered if anyone knows exactly what is checked in the auto safety inspection? I tried looking online and did not find anything specific.
Also, the house we are moving to has not had a cover on the catchement and its pretty green in there. What would you recommend doing -on a budget?
Thank you for your thoughts! hope everyone is well!
Laura

Its a colorful life!

Depends on where you go. If you go to Lex Brodies, here is what they check: http://www.lexbrodies.com/Files/Documents/saftey-inspection.pdf

If you go to the place in Orchidland, they only check to make sure that your lights and horn work and that you have something that looks like an insurance card.

I wouldn't do anything to your catchment tank until you get a frame and cover for it, for all you know there are dead animals in there. I would drain it, clean it, cover it, and start from scratch.

Welcome to Puna!

ETA insurance card.

You will need a cover for the tank, but if it's a small tank, about 15 feet in diameter, you don't need a frame. Just stretch it tight so that it stays above the water when full. The cover should be the porous mesh type, not made from plastic tarps. Also, if you clean it yourself or have it cleaned (recommended) don't walk on the liner because it may split or develop leaks. The cleaning guy may be able to clean it without draining it. There was another thread about having tanks cleaned. The University of Hawaii has a manual on the upkeep of catchment tanks. Always keep it in good condition. A lot of people don't pay attention to their upkeep.

"porous mesh type" means shade cloth. There are essentially two "grades". One costs twice as much and lasts four times as long. So you're either having a smaller up-front cost or longer term savings.

ETA: grammar

Just had a safety check at Kia dealer. Instead of getting paper to send to DMV they now do it electronically and they send a picture or two of your car to DMV in to verify. Looks like ship has been sunk. Hope that doesn't increase the low life crowd from scraping stickers off checked cars like has happened to me.

They started computerizing the inspections a while back. You can drive in or call them, as you have to make an appointment. The places I've been to check all the lights, horn, and then check and photograph your insurance paperwork. I think it's $15. There is a body shop in HPP that does auto inspections. If you have motorcycles, scooters, mopeds, you have to go to Hilo, as nobody does them near HPP or in Pahoa or Keaau.

I've had two cars checked with the new computerized method and the check is the same with the exception that they take a few pictures.

Was told by the inspector last time that they were now taking pictures to have a record of post inspection modifications like oversized tires for the cops to check as appropriate

life is short. enjoy it
