Island Naturals - Rant - TheCatHouse - 01-08-2015

I've read many post, how Malama Market was overpriced but I never had a problem the price. The service was outstanding, from the managers to the baggers.
Today, I needed a few things so I went to Island Naturals and ended up spending $125. After the cashier gave me my receipt, she started to bag my groceries but then got distracted the man behind me. After about a 2 minutes she noticed that I was standing there and said "I'm done with you". I asked her about my groceries and she got upset and she it's the store policy that customers need to pack their own bags or use the boxes at the counter. I thought this was the most insane policy, so I call the store to speak with the manager or assistant manager, guess what, I was told they left for the day (4:30pm).
I'm not a lazy person but this store really needs some help with there management. The service is inconsistent. I was there 5 days ago and I didn't have this issues, the cashier was friendly and bagged my groceries without me asking. If you have a policy like this, shouldn't this be posted somewhere, maybe near the counter.

Humanity is not what you can get out of others but what you an give to others.

I try not to shop there too much, but we do get some things there we can't get anywhere else, so we are in the store regularly. There is one cashier there who consistently does that, she moved here from Maui and seems to think bagging is beneath her.

I don't mind bagging my own groceries when they are busy just to speed things up, but that woman just stands there and looks at you like "Why are't you getting your stuff out of my way?" even if she doesn't have customers waiting. She was working today so it may have been her. I don't know who she is related to, but her customer service skills are pretty much absent and if it was my store I wouldn't keep her. Everyone else bags for you unless they are super busy and then a few cashiers will ask if I can bag along with them to speed things up.

I'm typing this while parked at my neighborhood Texaco gas pump, waiting for the attendant to get out here so I can roll down my window and tell him to fill 'er up. Hope he remembers this time to grab a squeegee and wash my windshield, then check the oil. Where the heck is he anyway?

I'm starting to get the impression I can no longer trust my car to, the man who wears the star, the big red Texaco star.

Island naturals is a dump. People here just make it out to be some awesome place. Its really just a high priced hippy hangout.

Ah, your cashier was ******, not only does she work there, she shops there, blocking the aisles. Contemplating the brown rice one grain at a time while having a flashback.

Kai Sorte is store manager.
Several assistant managers but speak with tall Lauri to get best results.
We used to shop there from time to time, mostly just for damage good veggy we do not raise.

It has turned into a full on dump.it is filthy and like almost a slum of stores for the yuppy hippy.

One item we get there is 10 lbs of a certain grain from Mediterranean .

Their price now a few days ago was over 18$ a pound. We were shocked.

180$ for next to nothing,so in Hilo shopping center main store, same grain per pound is 2.89 a pound.

Plus tax for Gov Ige.

We have made a personal choice to never shop there ever again.

...almost as if they aren't competing, so no longer have to care?

Maybe it's time to designate a few acres of C zoning for a real supermarket elsewhere in Pahoa? Because the "temporary" closure of Malama is going to be very long-term...

It has turned into a full on dump.

You must go to a far more upscale dump, or transfer station, or lava viewing area, or whatever it is now than I do.

Compare the island grown lettuce at Island Naturals, to the 10 days on a barge lettuce from California at Safeway. Add farm to dock in California, and dock to store in Hawaii, and it's two weeks old before Safeway can even get it on the shelf. That includes all of their other produce as well.

RE: Island Naturals - Rant - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 01-09-2015

It is supposed to be supporting local organic farmers

I would estimate about 15% of their produce is local, because that's all they can get from local farmers. It's a much higher percentage than any other grocery on the island, even KTA. The rest of Island Nat's produce is barged in, and does looks like all of the other grocery store's produce.

Their lettuce is the best on the island, and they sometimes have local zukes, tomatoes, mushrooms, and of course all kine fruit. What they need is more local vegetable farmers, then they would have more local produce.
