HONOLULU (AP) - The state Department of Health is fining Puna's geothermal plant nearly $24,000 for violations related to the release of poisonous gas during a tropical storm last August.
The state said Thursday Puna Geothermal Venture released 39 pounds of hydrogen sulfide into the atmosphere on August 7.

YES. 39 pounds of hydrogen sulfide isn't anything compared to what would happen if a fuel barge has a spill along the coast.

No one knows how much was released as the legally required monitors were off line, and PGV's credibility is clearly absent. PGV was told to get backup power for monitors long ago. Leilanidude defends PGV in the face of any and all facts - enjoy the fumes, neighbor. No one is comparing geo to oil; solar is the correct alternative, and a solar spill is known as a sunny day. LD - enjoy the 24 hour drilling too, since PGV recognizes no authority or law but wants to be called a good neighbor.

Mendo, what law is PGV not following? Are you referring to the night time drilling ban (bill 292)?

I don't know if 39# of hydrogen sulfide is a lot or a little. But if it was released during the tropical storm, wouldn't 70 mph winds disperse it pretty quickly?
There was probably a lot more to worry about from the millions of pounds of albizia trees crashing down around Puna at the same time.

This is a health safety violation from the State Department of Health, not a criminal violation, and the fine is to be paid to DEH which will then go into the general fund. It does motivate Ormat to do a more thorough job, seems like their safety backup valves are always failing. All the money spent on studies and trying to set up an elaborate health claim fraud could have bought a lot of monitors.

HOTPE, in fact the only injuries from Iselle came from PGV venting. Are you really gonna justify a situation where evacuation was recommended while it was physically impossible? Are you really heartless, or just not thinking?

It's been said that the time of the venting (7:30p) the winds were quite calm and did not pick up to the 70 mph tropical storm speeds till later.

I asked a question, which ironyak answered by explaining that the winds were calm at the time of the venting, and it didn't pick up to 70 mph until later. Thanks ironyak.
I'm in HPP, so most of the damage I saw and heard about was from falling albizia trees and branches. I hadn't heard anyone was injured from the PGV venting. What happened to them?
