What is this beach and how do I get to it? - randomq - 02-09-2015 Northeast of Keaau and east of the Mauna Loa Macnut farm... https://www.google.com/maps/@19.6436648,-154.982744,244m/data=!3m1!1e3 https://www.google.com/maps/views/u/0/view/105948703270612368230/gphoto/5896569949444598930?gl=us&heading=217&pitch=79&fovy=90 Anyone been there? RE: What is this beach and how do I get to it? - Royall - 02-09-2015 That is the Shippman beach. You have to walk in from HPP. There is a parking lot for the hike at the Hilo end of Beach road. About 2 miles if I remember right.... Go now while the trail is dry. Can get quite muddy unless you hike along the lava at the waters edge... RE: What is this beach and how do I get to it? - Carey - 02-09-2015 Been there, that is the beach at Shipman -the house in the google satelite is the family house & the inland area is where the nene recovery began... of course, the family does appreciate that people do not intrude on the property beyond the beach (as any of us would want, if we lived there) The crescent beach is smallish, nice, cool (cold) water upwelling, salt & pepper sand, green turtles basking, some reef fish, esp by the outer rock area, can have the wicked currents known in our area, esp beyond the outer rock area, but sometimes within. The walkout trail starts within HPP, Kaloli end of Beach road & runs inland, following the coast, or a more ... aerobic hike is along the coast. right now the trail is fairly/very dry (usually moist, with enough puddles to host swarms of mosquitoes) BE AWARE - there are no facilities, PLEASE pack out EVERYTHING you pack in. There have been some, even groups, that have left a trail of trash...& after doing more than a few cleanups along the trail, I kindly ask those that are not prone to clean up after themselves to find a beach that is easier to clean! Sorry if this is not a nice way of stating it, but I have cleaned more than a few TONS of debris from east coast beaches & after a while, you just see many of the people that use the trails & beaches as abusers! RE: What is this beach and how do I get to it? - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 02-09-2015 The parking lot at the end of Beach Road is closed, but you can park on the side of the road outside of the lot. There are still trees down oh the trail since Iselle, so you will need to walk around them. It takes a little over an hour to hike one way in it's present condition. RE: What is this beach and how do I get to it? - Ino - 02-09-2015 Looking for that secret beach? Or just want to check out the Big Island's coastline from the air. This is a great resource; http://tinyurl.com/mnb8kek I have used this extensively when I sea kayaked completely around the Big Island. And as in most things there's a lot more to this island than what it first appears to be. RE: What is this beach and how do I get to it? - bluesboy - 02-09-2015 There's a whole lot to that url as well! RE: What is this beach and how do I get to it? - cwoods61 - 02-09-2015 When there's a long URL like in post #3, the page zooms way out and the text is microscopic. I'm struggling to read it even with my reading glasses. Rob, is there anything you can do about this? BTW, I's using chrome in an iPad if that helds. RE: What is this beach and how do I get to it? - Ino - 02-09-2015 Thank you for the tiny url tip! RE: What is this beach and how do I get to it? - Andrew - 02-09-2015 A great and free resource for monster URLs is http://tinyurl.com/ Just copy and paste a long URL in the cell and it converts it to a more manageable size. RE: What is this beach and how do I get to it? - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 02-09-2015 chrome in an iPad Can you make the website on the screen larger by using your thumb and index finger to s t r e t c h the page open? That works in Safari. |
