Walmart raises mininum wage nationwide to $10.00 - macuu222 - 02-19-2015

Walmart decides its time to raise their minimum wage to $9.00 an hour immediately and $10.00 an hour next year! Wonder how that's going to effect Hawaii's current minimum wage of $7.75 hr?

It won't affect it at all. Walmart already pays more than $9 to start in Hawaii, as does most employers, if they want to attract and keep employees.

I know someone who makes $85,000 + bonus(5,000 -20,000) a year. And they started as a sales associate in the Toy department at 7.00 an hour.

thank goodness,,, and to be honest even 10 an hour is below what's needed in some places to live and raise children,,, but it is a damn good start !

Why would one start an entry level job at Walmart with the expectation that you are trying to live off it and raise children?

A full-time minimum-wage job used to be enough to raise 3 kids.

Today it's below the poverty line.

If you have the right attitude and commitment to the company you can move ahead quickly on the pay scale at Walmart. And if you earn a four-year degree while working at Walmart you can reach a very high pay scale as the person I was mentioning in my comment above. This person reached that pay within a ten-year span. I used to work there along time ago when they first opened up this is how I know this. I too moved up the pay scale quickly myself from seven starting to $11 an hour after four years of working there. I then left to become an ocean safety officer (beach lifeguard) mainly because it was a job I would enjoy being at the ocean all day.

The cost of labor and resources outside the US is less,
therefore businesses source labor and resources outside the US,
which translates directly to a less equitable division of wealth for people who live in the US.

Why? Because these businesses are not owned equally by all.

If people want a more equitable distribution of wealth you can either,
'join the club' = start your own business and do the same (outsource resources and labor) or,
'put your money where your mouth is' = don't purchase goods or services produced/provided outside the US.

If you choose the second option the following website may be of interest to you:

http://www.madeinusa.org

The above website does not sell anything, but does provide an information database of products still made in the US.

It is amusing that Walmart the very epitome of this problem is expected to provide a suitable minimum wage when every aspect of their business defines the very problem causing the need of a suitable minimum wage. Forgive the run on sentence.

Mahalo Rainyjim -

The minimum 10$ an hour is after taxes less than minimum wage.
For Hawaii the Island $25 an hour would be more livable as far as costs of livings here .
It is a good start in the right direction.
We applaud Walmarts and all others who understand basic economics 101.
Buying made in America is certainly one way each of us can contribute as in buying local .
Target is 99% made in china as well as walmarts at 89% made in china,Mexico or any other country .
We can all do our part in buying made in america.
There is a prefecture in japan called USA.
Be very aware of this - If the label says made in USA it is made in Japan. If the label says made in U.S.A. it is made in America .

kalakoa:

"A full-time minimum-wage job used to be enough to raise 3 kids. Today it's below the poverty line."

That statement really struck me as interesting, so I googled around. It appears the actual numbers are a bit different than how it ends up being repeated in various media outlets. Questions come to mind: What was happening to actual families before the minimum wage was instituted during the Great Depression? How did the later "war on poverty" actually impact it? How do minimum wage families fare when including changing government poverty benefits over time? How has the definition of the poverty line changed over time? And bringing it back to Hawaii--Is the Hawaii poverty line correctly adjusted above the mainland (presently at something like 12%)?

The story appears to have started at the website sharing this chart...

http://www.civilrights.org/publications/reports/minimum-wage/fig2-forweb.jpg

...which certainly has their slant on the matter. But what about the previous years cut off on the left of the chart? Clearly 1968 was cherry-picked, but I wonder....

Cheers,
Kirt
