I went today (Saturday). Crowded, lots of colorful stuff, rather high prices, friendly, helpful staff.
Didn't buy anything, will go back when it quiets down and have a quiet browse.
edit: sorry, I quoted instead of editing last time and got a double post.
Changing it here makes terracore's post look pretty silly.

For me...Pier 1 Imports has changed. Back in the 80's they use to sell unique stuff from all over the world. Today it's more like a Bed Bath and Beyond.

Apart from three full time managers they hired 25 part time employees i assume to avoid paying full benefits.

I have a friend who was recruited by them while he was at work on his full-time retail job. Seems they focused their hiring on offering second part-time jobs to folks who were already working. At least that's what they told him. He declined their offer because he wanted to spend more time with his family. Whether this stategy was to avoid paying benefits, who knows?

Maybe they need to learn from Cost Co. Pay people well with decent benefits and you retain more productive engaged loyal employees at a lower cost overall to employer. Recruitment and training of employees is a large cost of personnel.
But maybe they are stuck in 1990's mode - turn and burn 'em. One is as good as another.

I am not sure what their hiring policies are, but in the Kona store they have a couple of stellar employees who have been there for several years. It is always a pleasure to shop in that store and I am looking forward to checking out the Hilo store.
