RE: Cop said sun was in his eyes, as he kills tourist - alaskyn66 - 03-01-2015 Yes bike lanes.. Looks like a legitimate news source to me, the Star Advertiser is the largest newspaper in Hawaii, are you saying the link is fake, or that they got the story wrong? If you think the story was wrong, what are you basing that opinion on? Enquiring minds want to know. RE: Cop said sun was in his eyes, as he kills tourist - alaskyn66 - 03-01-2015 quote: I do everything from a tablet... That might affect the URL depending on which browser I use. Not to distract from the original story. When I first saw it on my twitter feed it this morning.... It sounded a lot worse. `Mangled bicycle with corpse nearby./ hit and run/ Is what I got it as.. Then later this afternoon more details came out... According to police, Jeffrey Surnow of West Bloomfield, Mich., was riding a bicycle east near the 11-mile marker when he was struck from behind by a vehicle operated by 30-year-old on-duty officer Jody Buddemeyer. Buddemeyer reported the collision at 6:25 a.m. A Hawaii County Fire Department report indicated that Surnow died at the scene, although a formal pronouncement was not made until his body was transported to North Kohala Community Hospital. Traffic Enforcement Unit officers initiated an investigation and arrested Buddemeyer on suspicion of negligent homicide. Buddemeyer was later released pending further investigation. According to a Hawaii County Police Department news release, the Office of Professional Standards will conduct a standard administrative investigation. Buddemeyer was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of that investigation. The collision occurred at a steep incline that follows a bend in the road. "There's no curb," said acting West Hawaii fire Battalion Chief John Whitman. "It's very unsafe if you're riding a bicycle." Whitman said the rising sun would likely have been in both the rider's and the driver's eyes as they ascended the incline. "You don't usually see a lot of bicyclists in that area because it's dangerous," Whitman said. Police are asking anyone who witnessed the collision to call their non-emergency line at 935-3311 or Officer Christopher Kapua-Allison at 326-4646, extension 229. RE: Cop said sun was in his eyes, as he kills tourist - shockwave rider - 03-01-2015 Both URLs went to Star Advertiser pages, posted about 5 hours apart, there are conflicts between the two stories, but I still don't see how anyone can call them bogus. Now you call it "probably nothing." How does something go from "bogus" to "probably nothing"? There is a lot of space between those two statements. RE: Cop said sun was in his eyes, as he kills tourist - alaskyn66 - 03-01-2015 I go over the saddle three times a week and see bicycles most every trip...Waikoloa Road is a deathtrap for anyone on a bicycle no matter which direction you are going. " The odds are good... But the goods are odd " RE: Cop said sun was in his eyes, as he kills tourist - Guest - 03-01-2015 What terrible news, my condolences go out to the family and friends of the victim. The written report showed very little sympathy for the victim, yet gave many excuses for the driver, why?. I lived in waikaloa and know most of those roads quite well from riding myself. Many more bikers in that area than most other areas on our island, so its not as abnormal as it was written. The sun usually rises over mauna kea a bit later in the morning this time of year on that side. Bikes are more common at those hours in order for the riders to try and beat the heat as they say. Tourism could be our number one industry and we should be going above and beyond in making sure our visitors return home safely, rather than blaming them for not returning at all. Its no secret that we need to protect our own, especially one of our boys in blue. Statements like "you don't usually see bicyclists in that area because it is so dangerous," is going above and beyond, we really don't have any safe roads on our isle for our bicyclists. To say the rising sun would have likely been in both the riders and drivers eyes without really knowing stinks badly to me. Very sad news, if its true? sadder statements by chief John Whitman, and atrocious reporting, which ever one is true. All just my opinions though. RE: Cop said sun was in his eyes, as he kills tourist - Wao nahele kane - 03-02-2015 My condolences to all the victims. Danger and Safety are derived through design and its adopted use. The jurisdiction responsible for the road design stand more culpable than either the motor vehicle operator or the cyclist. Arresting the cop served no purpose but to further assault him while under emotional duress. This State is ass backwards. |
