Pahoa Pantry & Soup KItchen - Rob Tucker - 04-06-2015

I would like to bring your attention to the establishment of the Pahoa Pantry and Soup Kitchen.

This has been initiated by the energy of a number of groups and individuals for the benefit of those in need in Pahoa. Most especially by a generous donation from Roy and Frances Simperman who live in the Waimea area.

I years past there were similar meal served at the Pahoa Community Center and when I attended I was impressed to see business owners as well as transients sitting down together to share a meal. A very community communion where all strata of the village could gather.

Here is the facebook link. Please consider donating your money or time.

Chicken or the egg? If they come you will feed them? Or if you feed them they will come? Pahoa is pretty sweet for the homeless. What with the free showers and the county maintained public restrooms always plenty of lounging space on the boardwalks and then the centerpiece - free food.

How long before the oppressed masses from HNL get tired of the new sit/lie laws and start migrating east?

I wonder what level of counselling and social work is offered with the meal?

I followed that FB link Rob and the description was pretty vague. I clicked on the website link and was taken to a shopping mall site sponsered by Puna Hope. No details about the new soup kitchen though.

RE: Pahoa Pantry & Soup KItchen - jimbob1st - 04-06-2015

We apologize for the technical difficulties. We are trying to contact Facebook and ask them to please take down this second page which does not contain all of our information and they have not responded.

Pahoa Pantry and Soup Kitchen is a non profit community based organization whose helpers are all non paid volunteers with financial assistance from private donors. We serve food to everyone (including the needy and homeless) at the Pahoa Community Center on Tuesdays and Fridays from 4:30 p.m., first come, first served. A NEW food pantry will be opened on the second Friday of the month, Kalapana Mauna Kea Church will than run the soup kitchen for us at the same time as our pantry, and we will be giving out free grocery bags to single people, couples, and families. The new Pahoa Pantry intent is to give out 40,000 pounds of groceries in the remaining 2015 year.

The PPSK has been in Pahoa serving the needy and affected during both hurricanes of last year, the lava flow (which displaced many) and has been volunteering and donating in this capacity for 5 years.

We stood side by side with FEMA and the American Red Cross during these natural disasters and are still here serving our community. We have not left.

We are feeding and assisting the homeless, those who are on government assistance who run out of food by the end of the month, mothers and fathers who are not able to adequately feed their families who come to our soup kitchen and will get 6 plates of food to bring back to their cars for their kids, and even the kids hanging out at the pool and skate park who are just hungry and we provide a hot and nutritious meal for.

A donation of $10 can buy the necessities needed to serve people for a week at our soup kitchen.

Let's all work together to combat hunger in Puna!

Nice first post, Mr Furst.

Mahalo for the information Mr. Furst. I hope that the Punaweb community can be of assistance.

For those Puanweb members that are new to the area and those that are not, this is an excellent avenue to help the community and get to know more people.

Assume the best and ask questions.

Thanks, Rob, for this; and thanks James Furst for the info and good work.

James, is PPSK in contact with local food producers?
A great opportunity to highlight local food for a local cause.
For example, we would contribute enough ground beef to make a big pot of chili.
Sometimes, we have avocados to spare.

I've heard much of Hawaii homeless were given one-way tickets from major mainland cities to get them out of the snow and out of the way. It's a 2 edged sword.

RE: Pahoa Pantry & Soup KItchen - Rob Tucker - 04-06-2015

Please bear in mind that the Pahoa Pantry and Soup Kitchen, as described by Mr. Furst, is serving a broad spectrum of local citizens from school children to homeless families and more. This is a good thing.

I will invite you to keep focused on this. If you want to discuss government policy on homelessness or homelessness in general do so elsewhere.

Assume the best and ask questions.

I second that Rob.

I would never question anyone's effort regarding hunger around us.

I know some people do not understand others going hungry, but it happens.

It is a great cause, and cheers to all involved.

We just need to pass the word around to them, since most of us in here do not need the help. I think?

Well, if you have internet and reading this now, you must likely do not need food.

I'd like to help but it's a facebook page, and I don't go there. Is there another way to contribute?
