Septic/Cesspool - volcanogirl - 04-13-2015

We purchased a 1 bedroom house but would like to add 1/2 bath. I've called permits & tax office but so far no one can tell me who to call to find out if my septic or cesspool would support the addition. Do I just start the permit process? This is so confusing and I can't get phone calls answered I kinda see why there a are a lot of un-permitted additions. Any advice is appreciated.

On the mainland most building departments count fixture units. Not so in Hawaii County. Here they count bedrooms. Most systems are designed for a minimum of three bedrooms.....and the county allows a maximum of five bedrooms on one system. Your system may be design for less than three bedrooms, I don't know. But adding a half bath should be no problem.

The state department of health should have a record on file for your TMK showing the capacity of your system. I don't think there is any charge to ask them to pull the record and make you a copy.

@Rob Tucker thank you!

Just don't be surprised if no record on file, but if a permit was pulled they might have the name of the engineer.

When I called the Health Departments number for septic systems, the lady who answered gave me the impression that if you were not an engineer, she did not have the time to answer a "commoners" questions, but polite persistence got me the answers I needed to make a sound decision on lot layout possibilities. Good luck!

As a side note once I got the right number to call (thanks Obie & Rob T) they answered right away and I was patched directly to an engineer who was super nice and helpful!

Does anyone know of a good plumber they would recommend?

We used Drainpipe and were 100% happy with them.
