Shoes that grow - Rob Tucker - 04-21-2015 On NPR today I heard about a young man, a volunteer at an orphanage in Africa, who invented a children's shoe that would grow with the child... which means they can be adjusted for size as the child grows. The shoes are designed to last about five years, cost about ten dollars and are intended for a warm climate. Seems like we have families in Hawaii that could use these... or perhaps someone might have ten or twenty bucks they might want to donate to a very worthy and very creative cause. I'm going to pass this on to my contact at Pahoa Elementary as see what she thinks. http://www.buzzfeed.com/emaoconnor/five-sizes-in-five-years#.mf73ng2dq http://becauseinternational.org/ RE: Shoes that grow - PunaMauka2 - 04-21-2015 love that kind of practical and simple innovation, especially those potentially beneficial to people living in extreme poverty. actually, sounds like it could be practical for any family with fast growing feet. i think there was a small typo in the link you posted. received an error message. i believe this is correct: https://theshoethatgrows.org/ RE: Shoes that grow - Malapuaao - 04-21-2015 I've made puna proof versions of these using old tires for soles. Takes about an hour to make a pair that are tougher than anything you can buy. aloha RE: Shoes that grow - PunaMauka2 - 04-22-2015 for a long time now i have been thinking to try that, Malapuaao. serious slipahs that can handle lava rock terrain. RE: Shoes that grow - ironyak - 04-22-2015 Did you use leather for the strapping or something else? RE: Shoes that grow - mac nut - 04-22-2015 I have seen kids wear out Chinese shoes in 2 weeks! RE: Shoes that grow - MBB - 04-23-2015 this is a wonderful idea. One caveat, Arch Support! RE: Shoes that grow - pahoated - 04-23-2015 People here wear rubbah slippahs. "Aloha also means goodbye. Aloha!" RE: Shoes that grow - PunaMauka2 - 04-23-2015 "People here wear rubbah slippahs." which is why a locally stylized version of the "Ho Chi Minh tire sandal" would be a nice option. no need those ankle wrapping constraints. RE: Shoes that grow - ericlp - 04-24-2015 Nice idea... But, kids are picky. Some of those pics the shoes are kinda not attractive. Thing is, ever been to walmart and looked at the quality or lack of it's 10 dollar shoes? I grew up wearing scotts. I don't know, even scotts now, are make in china, but it was the only slippa I could play football in. They actually had a large metal washers to hold the straps into the soul. I still wear scotts, tho, I don't think the quality is as good as when they were made in Hawaii. Scotts start out flat but after a few months, they naturally conform to your foot arch. I can really see this for kids that have no other options but here in the USA? Nah... I don't think it would fly unless you got some famous basketball star to wear them. Marketing and looks is everything it seems. ------------------------- To email me click on Link http://is.gd/QMfVEX |
