Removing a bamboo clump of "stumps" - EightFingers - 04-25-2015
Had to cut down a clump of giant bamboo and now want to level the "stumps" which are about 12" tall at the most.
Thinking of renting a stump grinder at HD.
Seems like it'd work, but thought I'd throw it out here for comments if anyone has any.

Bamboo is pretty fibrous and may just splinter like a huge piece of hair with nothing but split ends sticking up when you are through, but I have never tried a grinder. I have always dug out the root ball, either with a shovel, or a mini excavator, making sure to hand grub the hole when rootball is out to get as much remaining root as possible out, and it still usually comes back. Had a similar problem. Sprayed the stumps with weed killer and let them die. After a few months they became very brittle and could be easily broken off below ground.
No matter how thin you slice it, its still balony.

Tink, I wondered about that also. Digging is out of the question since the clump is huge and I can't get a machine back there anyway.
These have been sprayed with Honcho and should be pretty well dead. Maybe I'll wait a couple more months and see what happens.

Seems like a good place to start a compost pile.
