East Hawaii Hospitals Face Layoffs - opihikao - 05-21-2015

Nearly 90 employees will be laid off and some services will be cut at Hilo Medical Center, Ka‘u Hospital and Hale Ho‘ola Hamakua, according to a press release from Hawaii Health Systems Corp.
The cuts are the result of a projected $7 million deficit in the fiscal year beginning July 1, the release said. The hospitals comprise the East Hawaii Region of HHSC, the state funded hospital system which is facing a $50 million shortfall overall for fiscal 2016.
Planned closures include Home Care Services, which provides homebound individuals both chronic and transitional nursing care, and one wing of adult inpatient psychiatric care at Hilo Medical Center. Service cutbacks will reduce the number of long term care beds available at Hilo Medical Center, Ka‘u Hospital and Hale Ho‘ola Hamakua. Additional cuts will be necessary in many departments and in total 87 people, or approximately 7 percent of the total workforce, will lose their jobs as a result of these planned closures and cutbacks.

With all of the millions, and now "billions" floating around these Hawaiian islands, we can't even keep decent medical facilities afloat. Between Maui Memorial and our hospitals, this State of Hawai'i has failed miserably in overseeing our health care systems. SMH. [
!] So damn disappointed, and borderline downright angry. Mahalo to the people who have served our communities under such horrendous work conditions in these facilities.

A new law allowing hospital privatization will likely lead to a public-private partnership between Kona Community Hospital and The Queen’s Medical Center within five years, and the construction of a free-standing emergency room near the Kona International Airport.
Fortunately for us, Kenoi is seeking more bond debt so County can build another road to Kona Airport, that way we won't get stuck in traffic on our way to the new ER there.

Just try and get a good primary care doctor here.

state of affairs on this Island?

The whole TMT protest is unfortunately inchoate.
For scientific and economic reasons, building the TMT is a good thing.
For the protesters, I think their ire and fire should be 100% aimed at OHA, DHHL and
the US DOI etc., re: the various issues within the protest.

It is sad that the insurance companies have the control they have to approve, or disapprove procedures and what they will pay and not pay, combined with board members that care more about profits and not the patients because it's a business, doncha know, and do not see "government money" as currency.
It is also very difficult for a doctor to provide for his family with the pay the health companies want to pay when they more than likely still have a large college tuition debt, along with the cost of living on the island. Combine this with a wife and children harassed as being Haole, and they soon say "screw it, we're moving back home" where the quality of life for my family is better.
So, this is just my opinion on what I have observed as to why healthcare is so scarce on the islands, and is just an opinion.
