TMT issues trespass notices - Rob Tucker - 06-13-2015

From the Trib:

A leader in the fight to stop the Thirty Meter Telescope from being built atop Mauna Kea was served with a trespass notice Monday by security guards stationed at the construction site.

Kahookahi Kanuha said he and several other protesters, some of whom are Native Hawaiians who call themselves protectors of the mountain they consider sacred, make routine trips, at least once a week, from their camp outside the Mauna Kea Visitor Information Station to the TMT project site near the summit to pule and chant.

“As native tenants of these lands, as hoa‘aina, we have rights to them,” he said. “We go up there for religious purposes, to pray, so that all of this hewa, all of this wrongdoing, that is being committed upon the mountain can hopefully be washed clean.”

Just like the illegal taro garden a few years back, the State will only take so much...

somewhat of an interesting statement. where does religious freedom end and trespassing begin?

“As native tenants of these lands, as hoa‘aina, we have rights to them,”

sounds like an attempt to establish a self-ascribed authority.

"...all of this wrongdoing, that is being committed upon the mountain..."

individual personal opinion.

"...can hopefully be washed clean."

typical dogmatic zealotry.

If the Hawaiians want to pray and chant and perform cleansing rituals with acting or consulting kahunas as TMT is constructed, then a nearby place should be allocated for this activity, preferably with their input. Basic facilities to accommodate them should be also constructed and they should be able to decorate the facility with native and appropriate spiritual artefacts. Maunakea is a spiritual place, not only to Hawaiians but to those who fully support TMT. It can accomodate both and the State needs to realize this.

But if the goal of the activity is to disrupt the construction, drag them off to jail.
