Blessings to the heavens! - AKpilot - 07-08-2015 (full disclosure here I am 100% pro TMT) I miss Carl Sagan, Jack Horkheimer, Sally Ride and all those Space Cowboys of old. I miss when "Space Camp" was a "thing." The future is a wonderful and unseen gift; let not the prejudices of the present, cloud the judgment of the future. I know some Keck folks, some Uni folks and some laymen on the summit. They ALL love the Aina as much as they love the stars. Just some food for thought as I scream through the atmosphere at 35K ft. In a pressurized tube of magic. AKpilot We're all here, because we're not all there! RE: Blessings to the heavens! - TomK - 07-08-2015 Fly safely, and hope you can enjoy the night sky from your magical tube! They love it so much they think of nothing else! In fact, they are looking down at it so much, they have quit looking up! RE: Blessings to the heavens! - TomK - 07-08-2015 "I'm sure they love the Hawaiians too! But they really like that land that they control. They love it so much they think of nothing else! In fact, they are looking down at it so much, they have quit looking up!" I'm also sure that might make sense to someone, but not me. RE: Blessings to the heavens! - opihikao - 07-08-2015 I miss my Kupuna, whose view of the heavens was not of "scientific" means. The wisdom Kupuna shared was far beyond any telescope, any written word (never mind spoken in public, as they were beaten for speaking Hawaiian language at the time), thus, they taught us varied skills to deal with what we face today. David Malo (yes, please "Google" for many links of his view on the "blessings to the heavens"). A taste of his mana'o, and others, on the "heavens": http://www.mauna-a-wakea.info/maunakea/I2_traditional.html Better yet, if you all so choose, there are many, many, blessings to the heavens in our Hawaiian culture. Search, and 'ye shall find. Mahalo for this thread, AKpilot, it is with fond aloha for those who have traversed "many moons" before us, the gift of "blessings from heaven". Mahalo ke Akua, e na Aumakua, e na Kupuna. These days we live in are of a different light, however, we ask for those blessings for those who are deserving. E kolu mea nui. Ekolu mea nui ma ka honua O ka mana'o i'o ka mana'o lana A me ke aloha ke aloha ka I o'i a e Pômaika'i nâ mea âpau Pômaika'i nâ mea âpau Three important things in the world Faith, hope And love, love is the best And everything is blessed And everything is blessed Aloha kekahi I kekahi. Rest well all. A hui hou. JMO. (*Full disclosure - Not against TMT, nor any other entity that purports to better serve our Hawai'i nei.) ETA: Remove annoying "699%#" in the Hawaiian words. Ugh! Oh, and faroutsider, I get what you're saying, in essence. Mr. Tom, still have much aloha for you, Sir. RE: Blessings to the heavens! - opihikao - 07-08-2015 quote:Fly safely in your "tube of magic"! RE: Blessings to the heavens! - TomK - 07-08-2015 Opihikao, I'll let AKpilot answer, but I can tell you he/she is a rather multi-talented individual and aviation is amongst those talents along with other things. I was hoping to find a job for AK at the observatories which didn't quite work out, but think there's talent there to make it ultimately possible. This is a bright individual and really hope things work out. RE: Blessings to the heavens! - opihikao - 07-09-2015 Aloha kakahiaka, Mr. Tom. My comment (2nd) was to "the others" here (peeps who always seem to find something snarky to say), not AKpilot. Blessings from the heavens to Pam. Aloha, Pam (waving)![] JMO. RE: Blessings to the heavens! - TomK - 07-09-2015 Hi Opihikao, Don't worry, I know that comment wasn't aimed at AKpilot! I just wanted to point out AK has been a very impressive individual in the correspondence we've had. I feel bad that I haven't been able to help with a job, but am keeping it in mind. RE: Blessings to the heavens! - AKpilot - 07-11-2015 Hey Tom! Currently at my Annual Simulator training, so was locked in the "hot box" or cracking a book for the past few days, so pardon the tardy response. I am currently a Medivac pilot here in Alaska, so yes, I am a "sky pilot." I fly fixed wing (not helos) I have been a pilot since 2002. Tom, did I ever run into you at the Keck Picnic at Laupahoehoe last year? I know we have chatted over the site, but I got to meet some Keck and VIS folks when I was living on island last year. I believe I talked to a Tom at the picnic, but his last name didn't start with a K. I was a skinny little dark haired 34 yr old gal that went swimming at Laupahoehoe and chatted with some of the VIS/Keck folks. I send all my good wishes your way summit folks! Stand proud; I understand the protesters are standing proudly by their demonstration signs. If I were on island, I'd head up the Mountain with my own little sign; saying how much I love ALL the Mauna Kea Telescopes and all of the wonderful knowledge they provide to the human race!
