We're less than 5 hours from NASA'a major historic achievement. First space probe to visit Pluto.

The United States has been the first nation to reach every planet from Mercury to Neptune with a space probe. If New Horizons is successful, it will allow the U.S. to complete the initial reconnaissance of the solar system.

No need to stay up late as it takes 4 and a half hours to relay the info back to Earth. The countdown on NASA's web site is just for the actual flyby. It'll take 45-90 days after the close flyby of 7,800 miles for the full load of data to reach the Earth.
This space craft set the record for the highest launch speed of a human-made object from Earth at 36,373 mph. It has taken about 9 and a half years to travel the 3 billion miles to Pluto and currently is speeding along at 30,800 mph in the Kuiper Belt where trillions of objects are.
Discovered by Clyde Tombaugh in 1930 some of his ashes are on board and it'll be the first time human remains leave the solar system.

Well, it's just about there. Assuming traffic isn't too bad it should be at closest approach to Pluto in 30 minutes. Only thing I'm not sure about is if it already happened 4 hours ago or if it's just about to happen and we find out 4 hours from now.

Posted that a little late! I had it ready to go but got caught up with other stuff. Ironically, I got distracted by supporting NASA on another project we're doing for them. Oh well, can't be everywhere.
Really looking forward to the first data. First human-made object to explore the Kuiper belt. It's unlikely to happen again in many of our lifetimes, so savor it.

New Horizons has reported back with engineering data after closest approach and everything looks good so far. Pictures should start being received overnight our time. I hope Clyde Tombaugh had a great view.

"First look" data are now arriving in Australia. No released images yet, but shouldn't be long. Incredible. Didn't think this would happen in my lifetime. Pluto wasn't that important until we realized it was a significant part of our solar system, the Kuiper Belt.
