Black Cinders - 2liveque - 07-25-2015

Anyone can suggest a good source for black cinder? Not looking for a whole dump. More like just to fill the bed of my truck. Is there anyone or company around that offers this service?

Having learned the hard way, if you don't already have little fire ants, then it would be a good idea to carefully check any prospective source for them before loading up. I don't know of any sources that are free of them -

Frankly, you shouldn't get anything delivered if you are afraid of importing LFA. Even if the cinder is LFA free the previous delivery may have been to an LFA infested property and they hitch a ride on the truck muck (reference previous mention of Chain of Craters Road re-construction suspended due to the equipment spreading LFA into previously LFA-free areas) I've seen LFA walking away from my boots, having hitched a ride in the soil stuck in the treads in the sole.

All that being said, here is the ant lab article about how to possibly protect yourself if you get a delivery: http://www.littlefireants.com/fact%20sheet%207%20booklet.pdf

Thank you for your comments.

Does Puna Rock allow for people to simply go to the quarry and get a truck load? I'm NOT trying to get a full load delivered. I don't need that much.

Yes they fill up your pickup I have done a bunch of loads.

Home Depot has clean black cinder in the large bags for $5. Probably 20 would fill up the back of a standard pickup. Easier to put on a wheelbarrow to take to another area. Black cinder has a lot of black dust and shoveling it out of the back of a truck would be messy. Depends on the size of the job.

Which is it again - I can never remember. Black versus red cinder, one is better as a growing medium, one suppresses growth?

It may depend on where you are coming from. From Leilani I regularly go to Sanford's quarry down towards kapoho. I take a little trailer and they have sold me several different cinder sizes and soil mixes. It's usually $25. to $35. a load. What they call a small truck load. It's worth a call to both to see what they have and what they charge.
