Wonderful Adventure - Puna Kite Man - 11-28-2007

My wife and I wanted something different, adventurous, and exciting to do on our anniversary. So we signed up for the Ridge Riding tour on ATV's in Waipio Valley. It was awsome!!! We scrambled miles of trails through the eucalyptus forrest and back woods to reach breathtaking views from the back of Waipio Valley. Our guide ( Leo) was a real local that actually grows taro on his own acres in the valley. His knowledge of plant and animal life is incredible. The stories that he told about how he came to grow taro on his ancestors land gave us chicken skin. There is an interesting spiritual nature that you feel when you stop and view the big picture from the top of the Waipio Valley. We really got to see how Hawaiian culture started with taro and how important it is that this knowledge is passed on through the youth as he teaches kids out of his love for the land. Then we were on to the falls and swim hole that provided great subject for my camera. They give you time to swim in the cool refreshing water before showing us the incredible drop that it turns into. One of many great Kodac moments. My wife was scared but was able to control the ATV quite well as she kept up on the turns and downhill runs. We got just a little dirty splashing through the puddles as we are incouraged to stay in the middle of the trail. But that only added to the fun and excitement. I think it was about three hours or so ATVing in paradise. They provided snacks, protective gear and jackets for rain. All in all....very safe. I give it my best adventure rating. This was an anniversary we won't forget.

Sounds like you two had a riot. We headed over to Costco today and made a little detour down Honokaa way and also Waipio Overlook...posted a few pics in the Punaweb Friends album...check 'em out. In spite of all of the Vog today, the pics turned out okay anyway.

Carrie, the photos are lovely! Get to Tex's?? LOL

Kite man this sounds like such a wonderful way to spend your anniversary. Are the ATV's relatively easy to handle? Is there a roll over problem with them?

Happy 1st Anniversary!

oh, umm, ahh...yup. I was hoping to have a little photo album of our own (Tony & I) but seems Punapetah needed to dump garbage all over it.

Several years ago I met a guy from Pahala that had a Hawaiian double hulled sailing canoe he would charter out. I think it was about 20 to 25 ft. A coastal type canoe, not the type for travel to Tahiti. That would be a fun way to see the valleys and waterfalls and would be an adventure to me.
