State Workers - Working Hard or Watching Movies? - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 08-13-2015

Hawaii state IT staff were asked to block the use of Hulu & Netflix for executive, legislative and judicial branches of state government. It's not specifically mentioned but apparently they can still watch cat vidios on YouTube if they're having a rough day:

Employees have been streaming so much media through state-assigned computers during work hours that Hawaii’s state government has blocked services like NetFlix and Hulu.

... excessive streaming was “monopolizing a significant portion” of the state’s available bandwidth.

And this is a surprise because . . . ?

...when I read 1984, it was supposed to be Big Brother watching the workers, not the workers watching reruns of Big Brother.

Shouldn't it be blocked for all users, just like in the real corporate world?

Now days you can just use your phone for such purposes. These state workers should get with the times.

Thank goodness they still have Amazon Prime! I watch movies while I work... if you have small children at home, when things are too quiet you get nervous.. movies kept things from being too quiet.

Right -- but then we're paying for the data plan, on top of paying State workers to stream video.

I have a better idea: if they don't want to work, furlough them and replace them with someone who actually wants the job.

Kalakoa, I don't think the union rules allow that.

Kalakoa, I don't think the union rules allow that.

But it will provide the union with an idea for an added benefit. As with Sick Days, workers should have Movie Days, for when they just can't wait to see a film. Ten or twelve Movie Days a year should just about cover it.

State "lack of funding" furloughs, just a few years ago -- if they keep watching movies instead of working, we should have "lack of funding" again in no time.
