Man Arrested for Murder in Hilo - opihikao - 08-14-2015 SO disturbing! WTH is going on on our island!?!?!? [V] Be safe all. FYI: (*Snipped - More at link incl. video) http://khon2.com/2015/08/14/man-arrested-for-murder-after-womans-body-found-in-hilo/ Surveillance video from around Hilo town led police to the suspected killer — a man from Illinois. Curtis Hodges was arrested for second-degree murder at 11 a.m. Friday at a hostel in Hilo. Hours earlier, officers found the body of a woman nearby. Police say the 35-year-old suspect is from Shiloh, Ill., and had been living in the area for about a month. We are still waiting to learn the identity of the victim, and we’ll have more details after a fingerprint analysis. Police arrested Hodges after taking a look at video footage of the area. Officials say Hodges has a criminal background. “We found a lot of evidence on video footage. We haven’t looked through all the video footage yet, but there’s a lot of video footage,” said Capt. Robert Wagner, Hawaii Police Department. “There’s a business in Hilo that has video surveillance cameras and we also have county cameras on top of poles throughout Hilo town.” Hawaii police say the victim and the suspect didn’t know each other. RE: Man Arrested for Murder in Hilo - shockwave rider - 08-14-2015 This guy was just one plane ticket from anywhere. Unfortunately he ended up here. It is more WTH is going on with our world? Not all evil is home grown, this one wasn't. RE: Man Arrested for Murder in Hilo - Kapoho Joe - 08-14-2015 Technology at work! Tracked him right down, no muss no fuss. Great job HPD. RE: Man Arrested for Murder in Hilo - leilanidude - 08-15-2015 It is nice to know that at least the county cameras they installed years ago are still working. RE: Man Arrested for Murder in Hilo - Peter Easterling - 08-15-2015 "WTH is going on on our island?" Our island's law enforcement officers did a terrific job apprehending the guy. Be reasonably cautious but no need to live in fear. As long as we keep Illinois people outta here. WTH is wrong with Illinois? RE: Man Arrested for Murder in Hilo - shockwave rider - 08-15-2015 I am downtown virtually every day and I can tell you that most of the people who are sleeping in the doorways on the Bay front are well beyond being able to "choose" much of anything. The woman I see every day who argues with the walls and the guy who walks a dog only he can see are not on the same plane as the rest of us and are not capable of getting themselves off the streets at this point. The mental wards were emptied and shut down under Reagan, and never reopened, so we've been a country that uses the streets to house the mentally ill for 30 years now. Hilo's homeless population is pretty stable, and most are locals, a few young mainlander "travelers" as they call themselves do drift in every winter but they don't seem to stick around very long. The same people are sleeping in the same doorways every morning when I come into my office early, and it wouldn't take much to get these folks off the street. Utah reduced homelessness by 90% with a Housing First initiative, they get people into spartan but safe single occupancy housing without any strings attached like completing rehab first, and have found that a lot of the drug and alcohol abuse resolves itself once people feel safe and have a home of their own. People who work in the field say that a lot of the drug and alcohol abuse is self medicating to alleviate the stress of living on the streets, when people get safe and stable housing the abuse goes away. It is very dangerous to be homeless, especially for women, this guy was a predator who took advantage of someone who was totally vulnerable. I'm really glad this guy was caught right away and think we may find that he has done this other places if anyone looks at his travel history. I don't think the police would have responded so promptly and thoroughly to the murder of a street person in a lot of other communities. RE: Man Arrested for Murder in Hilo - Guest - 08-15-2015 Just terrible news for hilo, big island, and the entire state of Hawaii. I don't know yet who the victim was but my heart and prayers go out to her family and friends. She was probably someone's friend, sister, or mother who was enjoying the paradise these islands can offer to many before she came across this man. The homeless problems that have been ignored here in our state, island, and county won't be getting any better with added tragedies like these. There is millions of dollars being spent on the upkeep of current homeless sleeping parks. Throughout our entire county, with millions designated to build more. This May not be the best direction that will alleviate these growing homeless associated problems. Pahoated, I enjoy reading your views on most threads, even catch myself agreeing with what you write most the time. This was not one of those times, just left me with that aweful feeling. We may need to recognize this growing problem here, share ideas, in hopes to implement some compassionate changes for these down and out folks, living in our parks, unoccupied houses, hostles, or on our streets. There are no bright sides to tragedies like these unfortunately. I am very thankful the cameras were implemented and working, Also very pleased with our officers time and response to this horrible situation. RE: Man Arrested for Murder in Hilo - Kapoho Joe - 08-15-2015 quote: That's how you got here right? RE: Man Arrested for Murder in Hilo - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 08-15-2015 most of the people who are sleeping in the doorways on the Bay front are well beyond being able to "choose" much of anything. The woman... who argues with the walls and the guy who walks a dog only he can see are not on the same plane as the rest of us I agree, many of these people don't choose to be unemployed, they're unemployable. If you own a business, consider for a moment if you have a position for which you could train someone as described above. If you don't own a business, think about the workers you encounter on a regular basis. Could the average homeless person work as a knowledgable sales clerk, check out clerk, etc? How many homeless people would you consider hiring to clean your home or weed whack your yard? Many are probably unable to complete the job to your satisfaction because they don't understand what's expected, even if you tell them repeatedly. That's why they don't have jobs. And without a job they don't have money, and without money they depend on someone else to provide them with food. RE: Man Arrested for Murder in Hilo - justthefacts - 08-15-2015 I am in hilo everyday , agree with many of the homeless have mental health issues, but there are also many that are drug dealers and users . it has become so bad in the area that the church that feeds them 2x a week locks their office and gates in the day and hires a security guard for the night to protect the church. so you would think they would Stop the practice of feeding them since most of them have an EBT card and are not starving. I am very tired of having to wash down our business frontage everyday from the urine and human feces . I hope the county steps up and does something to help with this growing problem in hilo |
