Albezia Species - fruitbat - 08-18-2015 Does anyone know the specific species of albizia that grows all over Puna (and is, of course, a major invasive)? I feed it to my goats, and they love it more than anything else in the world, but then I read that albizia chinensis is actually not very good for them, whereas albizia lebbeck is. Or maybe we have a whole different species here altogether. I am having a hard time making a positive ID based on the photos and info online. Also, does anyone know what the calcium content of our albizia is? I'm looking to replace alfalfa as much as possible for my goats. I know albizia has me covered for the protein content, but can't find info about calcium, especially since I don't know our species. I'll be growing other things to supplement them as well (pigeon pea, sunn hemp, ti leaves, etc); this heavy dependence on albizia is really just while those things get going. Thank you! RE: Albezia Species - fruitbat - 08-19-2015 Finally found the answer... it's actually called falcataria moluccana, Paraserianthes falcataria, or Albizia falcata. Seems to gave a lot of scientific names for some reason. Unfortunately, still unable to find much specific info on the nutrient content as a fodder. If anyone has any info on this or could point me in the right direction, please let me know. RE: Albezia Species - Justin - 08-20-2015 By the way, there are plenty of plants in the Albizia genus that are not the "Albizia" we know and hate. For one, all of the Rain Trees, aka Monkeypods, are Albizia saman. There are actually 150 different species in the Albizia genus, but ironically not the one that everyone calls an Albizia. As you state, that is in the Falcataria genus. Go figure. RE: Albezia Species - fruitbat - 09-11-2015 Justin, yes, I have been noticing that, as I've been researching different tree legumes I can grow for my goats. The park near bayfront in hilo is just full of albizia species. The fact that albizia is not really albizia is probably what made it so hard for me to find the correct name. |
