Wow...Meteor! - descodave - 08-30-2015

Wow...at about 11pm. my husband saw something unusual streaking by our window (5th & Makuu). He jumped up from his chair & ran outside & confirmed that it was a meteor - did any one else see it? (We have a few still photos). Absolutely beautiful !!!

RE: Wow...Meteor! - Punalivin - 08-30-2015

Huge streaks going from left to right in the sky and lasted for a long time as compared to shooting stars. Beautiful and unusual. Seen from Kalapana Seaview. What a treat!

Just livin the dream

What direction were you looking and is there any place you can share the photos? I didn't see it, but you may have seen a bolide (fireball) or perhaps lucky enough to see a meteor skimming through the upper atmosphere. Can't really tell without more info. Was there a trail, did it last long?

RE: Wow...Meteor! - TomK - 08-30-2015

descodave and Punalivin,

Was whatever caused the trail fast moving (i.e., just a few seconds) or was it much slower? Did it end up breaking up, explode or just disappear?

PS. Punalivin, you said "streaks". There was more than one trail?

RE: Wow...Meteor! - Punalivin - 08-30-2015

Multiple trails, it did look like something exploding. I was looking north west I believe. Back to the ocean at Seaview estates. It was slow moving... As I drove up the road it kept moving from left to right mostly perpendicular to the horizon line. I observed it for approx 15 seconds of trails.

Just livin the dream

We had a conversation on PW about earth-grazing fireballs some time ago. Sounds like could have been one of those. Wish I had seen it.

Thanks. You may have witnessed (K)Cosmos 1315 re-entering the atmosphere. It is (or was) an old Soviet spy satellite that was due to re-enter about now. Your description and the direction you saw it makes me think that's what you may have seen.

I'll check tomorrow and get back to you. You don't get to see things like this every day, so congrats! If that's what you saw of course!

PM2 - I won't rule out a fireball right now, but given multiple trails and enough time to run out and get pictures, I think that explanation is unlikely. Fireballs are generally bright, but are like shooting stars in that they appear and disappear very quickly.

Any of the MK webcams catch it?

Here are a couple of videos of it:
